In all my years as a baseball fan I cant remember any team playing another team 12 games before June. Thats whats happening with the Cubs and Pirates. So far Cubs are 8-1 against the Bucs. I think the MLB powers really want the Cubs in the post season and to win the WS. Didnt they give them the easiest inter-league schedule also? Lets screw it up by winning all our 6 games against them this year.

The Pirates aren't that bad record-wise. The Cubs just seem to own them for some reason.

Why does it matter when they play them?

Agreed. They're just inflating the bubble early until it pops.

They had what one would think was going to be an easy interleague schedule. They face the Rays at home for 3, they aren't so easy to beat anymore. They also play Toronto and Baltimore aside from us. It does seem pretty easy considering the pitching staffs for the teams but not that easy. The Blue Jays have as good of a rotation as any. The Orioles can also hit the heck out of the ball but their pitching is dreadful. Not really an easy schedule but not one I'd really be worried about if I were a Cub fan.

Kind of like us with Justin Verlander, although I wouldn't compare the talent of the Pirates to the talent of Verlander. It's just shows how some teams own other teams or pitchers.

The Pirates are on a pace to win 74 games which will give them 16 straight losing seasons.

Meh that's based on last year. They avoid NY (who is currently in last place) and Boston but they get Tampa Bay, Bal , and Toronto, who are all vastly improved, as well as 6 against the first place Sox.

I would argue that the he Sox interleague schedule is easier with Pit, Col and SF....and we avoid Arizona....nothing to complain about there.

This morning on Mully & Hanley, Steve Stone pointed out an interesting stat. Many think the Cubs will win the NL Central by fattening up on all their divisional opponents. Well, according to Stone, the Cubs have already played 30 of their 47 NL Central games. And most of the 17 remaining include games agains teams like the Cardinals and Astros and not the Pirates.

No I meant Verlander cause I was comparing the Cubs owning the Pirates to the Sox owning Verlander. The Pirates can't seem to buy a win against the Cubs and the same goes for Verlander when he pitches against the Sox.

The Cubs play each of their division opponents 18 times for a total of 90 divisional games. Someone is wrong.

Yeah, it breaks down as follows:
Milw. 2-4, 3 games left
Pit. 5-1, 3 games left
Cin. 2-1, 6 games left
Hou. 2-1, 6 games left
StL. 0-0, 6 games left

The Cubs are 11-7 at home with 24 games left to play. 42 games total.

@Milw. 0-0, 7 games left
@Pit. 3-0, 6 games left
@Cin. 1-2, 3 games left
@Hou. 1-2, 6 games left
@StL. 1-2, 6 games left

On the road the Cubs are 6-6 with 28 games left to play. 40 games total. Overall record vs. the division is 17-13.

At any rate they've gotten fat off all the games they've played against the Pirates but won't see them again until late August after this weekend. Against all the other Central teams they're a meager 9-12, they will have to do a lot better than that if they have any hopes of winning the division.

The only purpose the Pirates have is to serve the Cubs. It could be with keys wins to start a winning streak, late September or early season wins. Or, players at the trading deadline.

The Pirates are a garbage team that's only purpose is to better serve the Cubs.

I just got home from a party surrounded by cub fans demanding to watch the cubs game. Being the only Sox fan there, I couldn't do anything about it. But I have to say, watching the whole freaking game, it was SO boring. IMO, NL games are pretty boring overall.

Bottom line: the pressure is on the baby bruins today. When the Cubs swept the Pirates in Pittsburgh on April 7-10 this year, it was the last time they won a series on the road. A loss today would continue that string.

Also, last night's loss dropped them into a tie with Cards for first place.

The Buc's starter has a lower ERA this year than the Cubs' starter.

We could all alone among Chicago MLB teams to be in First on Memorial Day.:smile:

Cubs lose when Sorryano lost in the Sun what would have been the final out of a Cubs' 5-4 win in the 9th allowing the tying run to score. He then was looking up at the Sun with a "who put that there???" look on his face afterwards.

Soriano's presence here in Chicago is showing the fickle nature of Cubs fans. Last week, Soriano was on a tear, and he was basically anointed King of the City. Now, he's a goat, and people will commence trying to run him out of town again.

I think everyone knows that Sox fans are fickle. Just look around these boards. But I get a kick out of media talking about how "supportive" and "great" Cubs fans are, when they are clearly just as fickle as fans of any other team.

Not important to the Cubs or the Tribune Company. As long as they send their own fans home drunk and happy, they'll consider their season a success.
