View Full Version : Has Danks not won a disproportionately large number of Quality Starts?

Seems like he has gotten NDs or worse on a ton of games that I'd think he'd win...

14 career quality starts

5 wins
4 losses
5 no decisions (Sox 4-1)

How does that compare to league averages? How about to the rest of our starters?

This year:

JV - 6 QS, 3-1
Floyd - 6 QS, 4-1
The Sticky Icky - 5 QS, 2-1
Buehrle - 5 QS, 2-3 - Looking at his game log, Mark really hasn't pitched as poorly as his record indicates
JC - 4 QS, 4-0 - Jose gave up 1 run in each of his quality starts

Panama Red has only given up 3 runs in his 5 QS, so even at 2-1 it seems he's still gotten the thai stick.

Setting the quality-start threshold at three earned runs in six innings makes quality starts an unimpressive stat. A quality start can involve more innings with fewer runs allowed, of course, but giving up three runs (or more if there are unearned runs) in just six inning often won't get a pitcher a win. It generally keeps your team in the game, but it requires at least two (and probably more) relievers to win the game.

As a side note to this, anyone notice that Floyd and Danks are now 7th and 8th in ERA in the AL for qualified pitchers? Who'd have thunk that?

The Sticky Icky - 5 QS, 2-1

Hahaha I propose that nickname be submitted to Hawk for use on-air.

I recall the same thing happened to Danks last season. He pitched well in April and May and had little to show for it. Then he went into the toilet. Hopefully Danks keep it going. The back end of our rotation has been better than anyone could have imagined coming out of Spring Training.

I'm sure that Danks and Floyd don't give a **** about wins with their ERAs. I'm pretty sure KW won't either, if their ERA stays as is. The people who should care about getting wins for a pitcher are the people who don't get credit for them one way or another.
