2008 Indians: best pitching staff ever?

Indians starting pitchers have like 43 straight scoreless innings right now. Their rotation is hot, that's about it.

It's out there. I mean really out there. It's kind of radical in a tubular way. You know.

The Indians pitching has been a surprise. I didn't think it would be this good. It probably isn't this good. But they are hot at the moment. Sabathia has pitched well lately after a horrible start. When your starters go deep and give up only an occasional run, the bullpen is usually sharp because it's well rested. Maybe the league will catch up to Laffey and Lee and the bullpen will be exposed again.

The Indians hitting has been a surprise, too, but not the kind that is making Indians fans smile. The last I looked, Hafner was hitting .228. On successive Sundays recently, the Indians were shut out 1-0 and 2-0, the second run in the second game coming in the ninth inning. Then they were rained out on Sunday and shut out 3-0 in one of their Monday doubleheader games. Even with sparse hitting and consistent failure to drive in runners from third with less than two out, the pitchers are pitching well enough that the Indians have put together a nice little run.

It's a long season, though. The 1976 White Sox had awesome pitching while they were winning 10 in a row. Over the other five-and-a-half months of the season, they managed only 54 wins.

So far in May, the Tribe has scored more than 5 runs in only two games: May 9th against the Jays (6 runs) and May 10th against the Jays (12 runs) and have been shut out twice (Jays and Royals). In May so far, the Sox have scored more than 5 runs six times.

Our starters can match up to theirs anytime, any place. We can take them and the games will be close, low scoring affairs.
