I don't know if it's been mentioned here much, but Richard Roeper is one of the few genuine Sox fans in the Chicago media. Anyway, this is from today's column:
As of this writing, the White Sox are in first place and the Cubbies are reeling from a disastrous first month of the season--but at the casinos in Las Vegas, the odds are much higher against the Sox winning the pennant or the World Series than the Cubs. At the Stardust, for example, the Cubs are 8-1 to win it all, while the Sox are 15-1.
That's insane.
However, this doesn't mean Vegas bookies believe the Cubs are better than the Sox; they're simply adjusting the lines to reflect the wagers that are coming in.
What it does mean is that even in the coldly calculating atmosphere of Las Vegas sports wagering, starry-eyed Cubbie backers far outnumber those who can see the obvious: that the Sox have a shot of winning the pennant, while the Cubs are doomed to another year of sideshow entertainment involving neighborhood controversies, tavern revelry and the Sammy Sosa home run circus.
Not that we're in dreamland on the South Side. At least Sox fans know everything will have to break the right way for our guys to outperform the Mariners, Yankees and A's.
But Cubs fans? They're like Charlie Brown, and the pennant is Lucy.
As for those silly green screens in the outfield at Wrigley Field, I suggest that the Tribune Co. tap into its vast entertainment resources to digitally reinstall the rooftop crowds--sort of like the Colosseum audience in "Gladiator." That way the Cubs can continue to give the corporate finger to the rooftop operators while restoring the colorful backdrop that looks so quaint and neighbor-friendly on their superstation.

I always thought Roeper was a total idiot. I stand corrected.

Then they can simulate Shammy's hot dog hop as he leaps into the simulated rooftop fans-while they trail 11-2.

The "Rope" also wisely defended Stern when all of Colorado was somehow trying to blame him for Columbine.
