I bring in my laptop and tell my girlfriend, "You need to listen to this. Floyd is pitching into the 9th."

"Is it a no hitter?"

Literally next batter got a hit... Ahhhhh!

No he didn't. He did mention it in the 8th and the 9th. Hawk might have a whole list of reasons for folks to get aggravated with him; but he was consistent on his calls.

And so what. Saying "no-hitter" never effects what happens on the field. If curses actually existed, 2005 would of never transpired due to the Black Sox scandal.

Gavin Floyd is going to pitch a no-hitter in a White Sox uniform.

He's been outstanding! I had a good feeling coming into this year with his mentality in spring training and several of my posts will back me up and he has delivered.

You've gotta like this rotation with the way Danks and Floyd have stepped up. This team will continue to contend with this staff because eventually they'll hit.

Hopefully this is the start of a run of solid play for the Sox and they build a lead in the division.

What was his pitch count at? If it was 105 or higher, I can completely see Ozzie pulling him; to avoid injury down the road. Either way, Gavin got the win and the confidence of both his team and the fans behind him. Last year, not so much Gavin Floyd love to go around; but I'm beginning to see this kid as the real thing.

It was 105. Pulling him was the right move. Anyone who is whinning about it is just looking for something to whine about. How someone can whine about something after a game like this amazes me.

Also note, Jenks hasn't pitched since last Monday. He needs to get an inning in eventually...

Unless of course Mauer hit it to right center; near Swisher. The thing that matters when the game is over if the Sox won or not; not if we see no-hitters. Gavin will pitch one; of that I'm certain. I will not however nit-pick the possibility of subbing in a defensive player.

They can talk about doll gate all they want, as long as we always have a white sox winner they aren't talking about to complain about.

Again. Batting average is extremely misleading. Juan Pierre has a pretty high career batting average. Would you take him over any our OF's or DH's?

Can't we just be happy the Sox won?

Oh and for the record, the no hitter would be nice but because of the error and the run allowed, it wouldn't be recognized by MLB as a no-hitter. Don't ask me why. Andy Hawkins has the same problem.

bleh.. that sucks. But coming that close to having a no-hitter against the TWINS? It was very exciting.

It's Dankerific
05-06-2008, 11:19 PM
The twins announcers, namely should be HOF Bert Byleven, were befuddled by Ozzie pulling Gavin, screwing up his chance to be in the media guide. Doesn't matter to me, I've never heard people talking much about one hitters, and we gotta save his arm for the rest of the season.

as for BA as a defensive replacement. I wonder if he would have had a better shot at the ball too. but as someone who tries not to mention "no hitter" during it (I texted people that they should just turn on the game, no questions asked), i can understand the mentality that you don't change _anything_ while its being pitched (I even held off using the bathroom, as little as MY actions could affect anything... but baseball superstitions are fun and make part of the love of the game for me. )

No, it would have been recognized, the reason that Andy Hawkins doesn't get the recognition is that he didn't throw NINE no hit innings because the Sox were playing at home and won that game before the 9th, so there was no need to have a bottom of the 9th. Andy Hawkins only through eight no hit innings.

No, it's a no-hitter... Andy Hawkins' runs into trouble because since the Yankees lost, he only threw 8 innings.

No hits = No hitter.

Nice to be arguing semantics instead of how may guys on the roster need to be thrown overboard.

Actually, Hawkins had the no-hitter stripped not because he gave up a run, but because he didn't go 9 innings. The Sox were the home team that day, and, because they were winning, didn't have to bat in the bottom of the night.

Thus, Hawkins's line: 8 IP, 0 H, no no-no.

EDIT: MLB went through all the listed no-hitters a few years back and purged some of the ones that didn't fit the new definition (0 H, 9+ innings pitched).

Just for the record, Mauer has 9 hits to LF this year and 8 to RF, so I guess next time we'll have Swish play at the warning track in far left/center field next time for Mauer in case he hits another ball to that exact same spot.

Odd game, I was there live. I'm with a friend who doesn't watch all that much baseball, Floyd gets the first two guys out and he says "Damn, I'd love to see a no-hitter" to which I replied "Well you just jinxed it early, I guess we just need to mention it every time we get someone out."

We literally did the countdown the whole way through to ourselves and were absolutely shocked when it got that late and he still had it. Great game, would've loved to seen Anderson in CF in that 9th inning, but that was a tough ball for anybody to catch, the fact that Swisher got that close was amazing in it's own right, we got a victory so whatever.

If this team starts to hit, there is no reason why they can't win this division.

This rotation is very good.

which is the #1 reason for hope this season. Before the game, Hawk and DJ were saying how even with the six loses, the team era went down during the road trip. reason #2 for hope, the bullpen has been decent. No they haven't been lights our (Jenks blown saves, some other hairy moments) but the improvement from 2007 is apparent. Reason #3, the defense. A few miscues of late, sure, but overall solid. Reason #4, there are still 135 or so games left. A wise man once said "winning is fun.":bandance::bandance:

Can't always get what ya want... but ya get what ya need --

That paraphrased statement from a legendary Rock group says it all. Gavin Floyd was 2 outs away from a NO HITTER. He had pitched meticulously. Most every ball thrown was near perfect over the middle of the plate. Then with a mighty swing from Joe Mauer's bat in the top of the 9th inning, that hope had simply faded. Swisheroo feverishly hustled to catch that ball. He leaped up in a gigantic fashion and then slid on his shoulder trying to grasp it. But to no avail, that small white ball skipped near the left field wall until it was recovered and then thrown back to second base. Mauer was firmly planted on second base with a smirk on his face and then Gavin departed to the sound of the vivaciously LOUD fans at the CELL.
It wasn't exactly what we wanted but we got what we needed. We needed to see LIFE in this team!!! We needed those bats to wake up and for "the boys" to realize that they are a troop of special players with skill, grit, determination, and enthusiasm.
take care -

Where the Hell was Brian? How does he sit on the bench in the ninth?
Our best defensive outfielder, and he isn't in the game to try to save that No Hitter. Swisher should have been in right, and Quentin in Left.
B. A. might have had that ball.

After the bottom of the eighth my son and I both agreed BA would be coming in to play CF. Only problem is, he never showed up.

The ball was hit hard and tailing, but it BA would have had a better shot than the 'MLB The Show' dive Swisher took (like 20 ft. short). Not to rip Swish, he did what he could, but BA should have been out there.

The game was really amazing. And of course all that really matters is that the Sox got the Win.

Speaking of Gavin, anyone who watched the game from start to finish, did you see how INCREDIBLY NASTY Gavin's pitches looked??? I mean it wasn't just his Breaking Pitches that had crazy movement. His Fastball and Changeup had beautiful movement on them as well.

He was changing speeds, getting ahead in the counts, just a really well pitched game.

But watching the break on his pitches was just amazing to see. I'm surprised that the Twins didn't bitch to the Umpires and ask them to check the ball. I mean, the movement that his pitches had really didn't look legal!! That's how damn AMAZING they were!!!

This kid has INCREDIBLE potential! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD that We picked him up!! :gulp::bandance::)
