First let me say this...I have not registered until today, but have been a lurker on this forum for years. I just have some thoughts that I want to share. I really think Ozzie is just not the right fit for this team. He played a huge role in the 05 team, but this is just not working. He really just cannot handle this bullpen, as he uses too many guys as specialists, when they are not. He also just has too much loyalty to his players. As ridiculous as this might sound, why not pinch hit for Thome against lefty specialists. Yes, he will occasionaly get a hit or walk against them. But overall, he is just a complete liability against left handed relief pitchers. I can see why it is tough to pinch hit for him, since he has hit for over 500 home runs, but enough is enough. A possible solution would be to bring up Fields, and let him platoon with Thome in the DH role, and be a pinch hitter late in the game. There is no excuse for letting AJ hit in that spot against Downs. Ozzie just has to forget loyalty for a minute, and take advantage of the players swinging the bat well. Quentin might have been the only one at the time, but why not move him up while the other are struggling. AJ should not be batting 6th. Even if he was not slumping, I like him better in the 8th spot. Clearly, Richar coming back healthy is extremely important. If he can come back and swing like he did at the end of last year, I would not even mind testing him at lead off, with swisher and quentin batting 6th and 7th, with crede and AJ 8th and 9th. The point I am trying to make is that while Ozzie does not do the hitting, or the pitching, or the fielding, he affects the game. It is not totally his fault, and the hitters are really underachieving, but it is his responsibility to make the best out of the team that he is given. I just do not think he is doing that.

I don't know how many more times this needs to be pointed out (http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/bsplit.cgi?n1=thomeji01&year=2008#plato-plato).

So, you want Ozzie to pinch-hit for Thome or A.J. against a left-handed pitcher in the late innings?

Just who would you like to see up there? Uribe? Anderson? Hall?

We don't have any great hitters on our bench. In fact, we don't have any average hitters on our bench. Fields is hitting .247 down in triple-A, so let's not assume he is the magic bullet.

Exactly what we were discussing when Thome stood in against a tough lefty in the 8th with two out, a runner on second and one run down. Who would you pinch hit for him? There's no one.

I see you are a newbie.

You will find yourself immersed in endless and ultimately pointless debate. Your opinions will change in sync with the team; you will take one stance when the team is losing and then abandon it when the team is winning. There will be particular central issues you will feel strongly about, and like the tide, they will at first come flowing toward you and swallow your feet, then they will recede, and just when you think you're dry those same issues will come rushing towards you once again. The manager sucks, then the manager is great; the hitting coach sucks, then the hitting coach is great; winning now is most important, then it's about building for the future, and on and on and on.

You have lurked about the entrance to the crypt. Your curiosity has propelled you forward, led you down those steps, and before you know it, you will have fallen into intellectual death and baseball darkness.

Welcome to WSI.

The door has been shut. You have crossed the threshold and there is no turning back. Enjoy the dancing banana. :bandance:
