I heard from a very credible source that Adam Russell is getting the call up for the trip Toronto.

Is it the same source that mentioned it in the Sun-Times the other day and USA Today:redneck

Since when did the Sun-Times count as a credible resource?

Here's the article we're talking about (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/925702,CST-SPT-soxnt01.article).

It was in the Times yesterday and USA today on this date. I could send you the links if you want.

I would think with four games on turf and the way we've been playing...they would want Owens to replace Ramirez for this series. Give Dye, Konerko(hand injury) and Swisher(needs a breather) each a day off over the course of the series...see if Owens' speed can give us a little spark and allow Swisher to move to his more natural position in the order. He's hitting .306 w/.402 OBP (10 BBs) at AAA...we need some speed in this line up. Use Swisher to break up "Mount Rushmore" in the middle of the batting order (Thome,Konerko,Dye,AJ,Crede).

I agree wholeheartedly. You'll never know what you have with Owens until you give him another shot at the big league level. From the story in today's Trib about Paulie's hand, he needs about 4-5 days off. Swisher to first, Owens in center.

Isn't Owens out of options though, since they sent him down after the rehab stint?

You can send a player up and down as many times as you want during the season, and only 1 option is used. Now if this year is his last and next year he'll be out, I'm not sure. But he's fine for this year I believe.

I was thinking Fields. He could get a couple of starts at 3rd to give Joe a break from the astroturf. Crede could DH a game to sit Thome against a lefty

They're all off today.

We're only facing RH starters against the Blue Jays.

I have not been a fan of Owens, and was actually happy to not have his slap hitting style in the lineup come opening day, but... we definitely could use a spark in this lineup, just like he did last year after his callup. I actually was pleased with him by the end of last year, but not sold on his place on this years roster.

Assuming Konerko indeed misses a couple games, we definitely need an extra bench player for the series with Swisher at first and a mix and match in the outfield depending on pitching match ups. With Russell coming up, that would leave us 3 on the bench.

Is it possible Russell is coming up, and another of our relievers might get sent down, in addition to OWens coming up? Just a thought.

I guess it's possible...anything is possible, but it's doubtful. The bullpen is pretty much set.

Considering Jim Thome is hitting .300 and slugging .700 against lefties while hitting .194 and slugging .387 against righties, I could see how people constantly want to sit him against lefties. (Teal implied.) His on-base percentage -- .367 to .364 -- is slightly better against righties though. It appears that righties have been pitching around him while lefties go after him, because 16 of his 18 walks have come with righties pitching. His strike out rate is pretty even, too. He has a little more than twice the at bats and a little less than twice the strikeouts against righties. He also is batting .400 with runners in scoring position, but in five appearances with runners in scoring position and two outs, he has failed to get a hit, striking out three times and walking once.

I don't worship statistics, but I find it dumbfounding that people complain about Thome not being able to hit left-handers when this year he isn't hitting right-handers. For that matter, I can't understand the feeling among some that it's necessary to get rid of either Thome or Paul Konerko because they are slow and don't hit, except into double plays. Konerko is hitting .364 with runners in scoring position, even though he is only hitting .221 overall.

it already a done deal Russell is with the team now, he traveled to Buffalo with the AAA team and then flew to meet the Sox in Toronto.

Why do we need another guy in the bullpen? I know that we play in a stretch without a day off, but we just called Wasserman up. Get Owens or Fields up here, I want players who can produce, not players who are going to mop up a blow out.

Masset got nailed with a ball off the ankle and Wasserman, I think, took a bit of an awkward tumble yesterday, IIRC. Since this is only reportedly for 3 games, I guess the Sox want another arm more than a guy on the bench.

Across 334 ABs against LHs in 2006-2007..Thome's line was:

.219/.337/.356 with 12 HRs and 47 RBIs

It's nice he's had some big hits off LHs this season, but over the long run, I don't want him in the 3-hole against lefties. And LOOGY's late in the game are making him look helpless at the plate. I'd rather he's benched against lefties, but if he's going to play...he should be batting 5th or 6th.

I'm sorry I encouraged the hijack, but Thome seems to be looking more helpless against right-handed pitchers. And if he is looking especially bad against left-handed specialists late in the game, it should indicate that he is even stronger against left-handed starters than his numbers indicate.

His numbers from the previous two years are irrelevant if he has made adjustments. I don't know why, for example, he has so little success with so many walks against righties, but it could be that he isn't getting anything to hit and pitchers feel they don't have to come into him, the consequence being a lot of walks. He doesn't walk as much against lefties, but he gets on base at nearly the same rate. In an RBI position, a hit is better than a walk. You could make the argument that Thome would be better hitting in the three-spot, an RBI position, with lefties going and hitting elsewhere when righties are pitching.

I may have said earlier that I don't worship statistics, but these numbers indicate more than the fact that he is getting "a few hits" against lefties. His slugging numbers are higher as well.

Let's see how 2008 unfolds...two years worth of ABs vs. a single month of April...I'm not convinced. If there comes a time when Thome can't hit righties...I'm pretty sure that will mean it's time for him to retire.

I'm happy that Ozzie Guillen is managing and that 2008 will unfold with Thome starting against both right-handed and left-handed starters.

Is that why he left after 4? I wasn't watching the game during the 4th or 5th, so I had no idea.
