LaMarr Hoyt tossed a gem in that game.

A few years ago ESPN classic played that game and it made me realize that Rudy Law and Tom Paciorek have the weirdest looking batting stances ever.

It's days like this that I wish I wasn't at work so I could see that Sox team from the year I was born.

They couldn't pick another time? Like any time the Sox and Orioles aren't playing a regular season game? :?:

That was a great team. All attitude and they looked like they couldn't lose after the all star break.

That said, the playoff loss was devastating.

What a great find.
I love the quote they had from Kittle about his 150 Ks.

"I swing at everything, that way they don't find out my weakness"

Holy crap!
Julio Cruz with 57 steals, Rudy Law with 77. Will one team ever see that again? That's insane.

Oh yeah, Rickey Henderson with 108 that year too!

If Owens doesn't play, we won't come close to even matching Cruz.

If team speed is something you like then you'll love the 1985 St. Louis Cardinals. Those guys had 314 SB as a team!

Vince Coleman 110
Willie McGee 56
Andy Van Slyke 34
Ozzie Smith 31
Tom Herr 31
Terry Pendleton 17

However they only hit 87 HR's as a team. Jack Clark led the team with 22.

The game has changed quite a bit hasn't it? Players like Rudy Law, Vince Coleman, Tim Raines, Ricky Henderson, and Kenny Lofton are becoming an extinct species in today's game.

Totally. It's funny because Fisk is the only one that looks like an "athlete" in this 1983 game.

Everybody else is either super skinny or just flabby.

The 1986 team was awesome in the original RBI Baseball.

Yeah, it looked like they let regular guys play back then. Today, middle IFers are more built and cut than power hitters in the 70s and 80s.

There's so much more money in homers and the need for run production is too big. The 83 Sox scored 800 runs I wanna say, which was serious lumber. Today that would probably place you in the lower end of the top 10 in MLB. The increasing salaries have naturally phased out the Vince Coleman types for the most part.

I started a thread about how baseball players used to look a long time ago.
It never really caught on, but it did feature pictures of guys like this...

Good ol' 'Kent Tekulve. He was one of baseball's ugliest players of all time, Plus he wore those goofy "glare reduction" tinted glasses all the time.

Madrova & Veeck:

Go to Retrosheet.com and check out the stolen base totals for the Oakland A's and the Pittsburgh Pirates when Chuck Tanner was the manager. Starting in 1976. You are in for a very big shock.

Lip, you weren't kidding! I didn't know that the '76 A's had 341 SB's. :o:

Even more shocking was that Don Baylor had 52 of them.

Jerry Dybzinski.

Game 3 was a complete heartbreaker:

0 runs on 10 hits & 3 walks (11 LOB)

Cruz singled and stole 2nd TWICE...Law (twice), Paciorek, Fisk couldn't get him home

The infamous 7th inning...not only did Dybzinksi screw up on the base paths, but the only reason he was on base was a failed bunt attempt with runners at 1st & 2nd....O's got the force out at 3rd base.

Bottom of the 9th...Law strikes out with the winning run on 3rd.

Landrum's HR was a heartbreaker...but Barojas and Agosto letting in runs 2 & 3 was the real back breaker.

Burns tossed 150 pitches in that game.

And if you read Vance Law's WSI interview he has an interesting take on what happened in the infamous 7th inning. I've never heard anyone before or since offer it.
