Home plate ump Kerwin Danley took a pitch to the bottom of his mask. He's been down for a few minutes now and it looks like they're bringing in an ambulance to take him off. Hope he's okay.

When I first saw the title, I thought the scary moment was going to be that Mark Redman was pitching. 10 run first inning. Nice.

Hope the ump is okay.

Redman is wearing it tonight. :D:

I can't believe that all of these home plate umps don't wear the goalie masks. The hat and mask combo just doesn't cut it.

On BBTN, they said the 94 MPH pitch hit him on the jaw. Listed in good condition at the hospital.

It looks like the pitcher and catcher got their signals mixed up. Catcher set up for a breaking ball down and the pitch was fastball up and in.

It did appear to have a hangy-down piece (you like that technical term?).

The guys in the booth gave an update on Danley last inning. He did lose conscientiousness briefly on the field and his trip to the hospital is precautionary. Hopefully they will have another update before the game is over. I guess Danley lives in the LA area and his wife was at the game. Scary stuff.

That protects the neck/throat, not the jaw unfortunately.

Redman only gave up 1 hit in 5 innings. Too bad for him those 5 innings came after the first.

Update: Danley was released from the hospital last night and is resting comfortably at home. Great news!
