Inspired by the uniform change thread...what is your favorite Sox uniform of all time?

Mine would have to be the current uniform followed closely by the 1917 uniform.

What's yours and why?

The red pinstrips from the early 70s. It was when I became aware of baseball and the White Sox.

Same reason, but for me it was the Bill Veeck-era pullovers with the floppy collars (which were left off the poll for some reason!).

The '83 uniform. They weren't wearing it when I was born, but there's a picture of me as a baby wearing a jersey like that.

The 1969/1970 uniforms are my favorites
The home one in particular, which looked kind of like the Tigers' home uniforms.
I saw a Joel Horlen '69 jersey once on eBay - I regret not at least bidding on it.

Although the Sox have had more uniforms than any other team in MLB history, there is no denying that they finally got it right.

For nostalgic purposes I could see why people like the other uniforms. I'm guilty of it too, I like the '83 uniforms. But let's face it, the uniforms we have now are bad ass and definitely among the best in baseball. I have a friend in LA and even though she doesn't know much about baseball has said that she has seen people wearing the hats and jerseys. I was in Mexico and saw people there selling and wearing Sox hats.

Nope. The Cubs had a powder blue road uni in 1942. The Dodgers also experimented with one in '44 (with white lettering, looked like the Royals road uniforms from the mid'-80's)

I didn't know the Cubs had a powder blue road uni, I do remember the Dodgers one though, I believe it was made out of satin and only worn in night games.

The '83 unis were the ugliest in the history of the franchise. You'd think that as an OF I'd go for the '59 uniform, but my favorite is actually the red pinstripes, despite the red stirrups.

The current uniforms are my favorite. I've liked all the uniforms the Sox have worn since I started watching them. They're my team. I loved the uniform Aparicio wore. I loved the uniform Allen wore. I loved, at least came to like, the uniform Lemon wore. I loved the uniform Kittle wore.

If any other team wore the 1977 and 1983 uniforms, I would have considered them ugly. The red pinstripes and the silver and black uniforms would look good on any team.

I voted for the current uniforms. I have to say that after decades of playing musical chairs with the uniforms, the orginization finally got it right with theese threads. I am a fan though of some of the past unis, I recently purchased some cooperstown caps on the official website. Of my recent purchases, I picked up the 70s red cap as well as the 59 black with the red (My second favorite uni). As horrendous as I thought the pullover jerseys were at at the time of the early to mid 80's, I look back fondly on those goofy things now, lol.
I do have to say that my favorite cap is the pigtail C of the late 80s, sentimental value mostly, lol.

My sentiments exactly. I remember when the current unis came out, I said, "That's it! No need to change again!" I like the current unis for their classic style.

I must say, though, that the red pinstripes are a close second. Never liked any of the ones that followed those until the current unis.

The late 80's unis were cool, and would get my vote, but like most people because that was a time I really enjoyed rooting for the SOX. I remember people calling them the "Spaghetti Sox" because the script looked like a piece of spaghetti stretched out. The '83 unis (Softball SOX as I remember) were also special. I have a home jersey from this era that I wear on a daily basis during baseball season.

Which is why I like the 83 uniforms. It was original without making the players look like jokes (I'm looking at you, shorts uniforms)

It is clear that the majority of people like the uniform that the team was wearing when they first became active Sox fans. That's the ONLY possible explanation for the love of the 80's softball uniforms, which were pretty much uniformly hated by every adult Sox fan at the time they were wearing them. They were hideous then, and even more so now that no one is wearing garish double-knit pullovers with beltless pants any more.

I became a fan as a kid when they were wearing the 51-63 version, and it's still my favorite, with the current one second and the red pinstripes third. I've hated every other uniform that wasn't a version of the Old English "Sox" they've had during my life, with the '83 uniform being dead last.

I also think that's why the people of your generation are pulling for the '61-'63 versions and not say, the 1917 unis. We all go to the ones that make us remember our childhood.

I always find it amusing that the entire era of the Bill Veeck/floppy collar uniforms gets slammed because of the infamous "shorts" game. I mean, its not like they were wearing them every few games.

The mid-80's jersey is just popular right now because it's a flavor of the month amongst those looking for "hip, retro" jerseys. They're so hideously ugly, it's beyond words.

I know you don't like the late-80's, early 90's "Eddy Einhorn E" jerseys, but I like them a lot more than the pajamas they were sporting in the early-80s. I think they've got a much more classic and elegant look.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dressed_to_the_nines/images/al_1988_chicago.gif

That said, I hope they never change from what they have now, but I'd like to see them wear these for a game one of these days,

They looked like someone called a uniform manufacturer and said "I have a team called the White Sox. Make me some uniforms. Just make them red, white, and blue.

They were, however, a quasi-throwback to 1942.

Nope, I wear my 83 gear because I think it is a cool reminder of a great year and because it was a great time to be a ball fan on the South Side, till Landrum of course.

Also, I think the jersey, short of the sands-a-belt pants holds up well.

I love my Fisk 83'....however, I also find it in my heart to love my 91' Fisk pinstripe.

OK, well I'm sure not everyone digs the '83 uni based on its current popularity (I do own a Mike Sirotka jersey from 2000, for pete's sake), but a lot of the reason its so popular is because of its "retro" appeal.

I'm sure part of it is the fact that "retro" is popular now, but I also think it is because a lot of people look at that jersey and think "Oh that's what they were wearing when I was growing up" and it harkens back to carefree childhood memories. Whether they're "ugly" (I don't think they are) or not is irrelevant. People who were growing up when the Pirates were wearing those hideous bumble bee unis will harken back to their childhood too.

Look, the '83 jersey is hideous. Always has been and always will be. It looks great on a drunk in the park, but should never be worn on the field again (if for no other reason than why be all nostalgic about a team that choked?).

First off, it is important to remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, just because YOU don't think it looks nice doesn't mean other people agree. And here are EIGHT uniforms that I think MOST people would agree are uglier than those '83 ones. For the Orioles and Phillies I'm refering to the solid maroon and orange ones...and these are just off the top of my head.

And I think that most people would only agree that, of those you picture above, only the Astros, the Giants road, the Padres, the all-red Phillies, and the all orange Orioles are in the same league with the '83 Sox in terms of hideousness.

The '83 Sox uniform's badness is exacerbated by being inaugurated at the end of the bad uniform era. Just as most teams were starting to bail out on the garish polyester, the Sox decided to jump in.

And really, does that fact that you can find some equally bad, or even worse, uniforms than the '83 Sox uniform, excuse them or make them acceptable?

I did vote for the current ones...it did start the current black uniform fad. However, I nominate this uniform for an "honorable mention"...

I was 11 when the team that wore this uniform won the American League Western Division title, and was sad when they lost to Baltimore (like a lot of us fans who were around back then).
