 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
Part Two:  the seven days that made our season, consecutive road sweeps of New York and Cleveland.

Durham Crushes Tribe!

(June 13, 2000)

This was the game Sox fans were the most worried about.  Facing Sox killer Bartolo Colon, this is the one we most likely would sacrifice to set up a strong series finale on Wednesday.  No need to fret, Sox fans.  The Sox touch Colon for three runs, go to extra innings, and Ray Durham sends the Tribe faithful home losers on a crushing homerun to dead-center field, 4-3 in ten innings.

Sox starter Jim Parque didn't get the decision, but pitched bravely into the eighth inning, allowing two earned runs (one after he left), seven hits, striking out four and walking two.  Kelly Wunsch couldn't hold Cleveland and blew his second hold of the season.  Wunsch and Bill Simas teamed up in the ninth inning to retire the Tribe in order.

The Sox might have won this game without the added frame had the umpires ruled correctly on a two-run homerun in the fourth inning hit by Magglio Ordonez.  The replay showed the ball clearly hit the railing above the wall, but Maggs only got a double for it, with Frank Thomas thrown out trying to score.  Frank was 1 for 3 with two walks, Ordonez was 2 for 4 with a ribbie.

Bob Howry got his first save opportunity in weeks and didn't disappoint.  Not even a fielding error gift could bring the Indians back from the dead.  Howry cut down the lead runner on a bunt attempt for the first out, then induced a nifty 4-6-3 double-play grounder from wonder boy Russ Branyan to end the game.

Sox fans, our Pale Hose go for the sweep Wednesday evening in Cleveland.  The lead is now four games, and the Sox are for real -- just ask Tribe fans!
