Cleveland Massacred!

(May 27, 2000)

The good old 90's are a distant memory amongst the johnny-come-lately fans of the Cleveland Indians.  For their legions of casual fans, the history of baseball in Cleveland only dates to the opening of Jacobs Field in 1994.  After five consecutive division titles, it's time for the frontrunners of Cleveland to reevaluate their allegiance.  I understand they have a shiny new N.F.L. expansion franchise.  Woof! Woof!  The guy with the Indian drum is already passe.

What has all of Cleveland in a heightened sense of angst was a humiliating defeat to our Chicago White Sox, the second in as many days, this time 14-3.  The Tribe used five pitchers trying to stem the conga line that Sox hitters formed at several points in the game.

The Sox shelled Cleveland for sixteen hits, but the deadliest of all blows was delivered in the very first inning.  Jose Valentin punched one over the right field wall for a two-run dinger and a quick Sox lead.  Tribe cannon fodder, Jaret Wright never survived the second inning.  He left having allowed seven runs on six hits and an ERA fluffed up to 4.40.  That wasn't Kansas City you were facing tonight, Jaret baby!  It was 12-0 after five innings.

Jim Parque was magnificent and pitching easy with a fat lead.  He worked into the seventh inning allowing just two runs and six hits, striking out five against two walks.  Jesus Pena and Bob Howry finished it off.

With the game firmly in hand, the real interest revolved around Jose Valentin's attempt at hitting for the cycle.  He had a chance to become only the second player in the history of the game to do it twice in a single season.  He got as close as the on-deck circle before the final out was recorded in the eighth inning.  That's okay, Jose.  Six rbi's is definitely earning your pay.  Besides, we play Cleveland again tomorrow and this time it's for the sweep!

Life is good.
