Sox Rain over Tribe!

(May 26, 2000)

Welcome to Chicago, Tribe fans.  Sox fans would like to remind you the 90's are over, and so is the free lunch in the A.L. Central!  Frank Thomas drilled the message home in the very first inning with a two-run smash that set the tone for an exciting if wet 5-3 Sox victory over the Cleveland Indians.  Sox fans are grinning wider than the grotesque Chief Wahoo emblem emblazoned across the chest of a 300 pound Clevelander.

On a 2-0 pitch, Frank Thomas took Tribe starter Chuck Finley downtown, driving in Jose Valentin who had doubled his way onto base.  The quick lead gave Sox starter Cal Eldred room to pitch aggressively against Cleveland's line up.  After a long rain delay to start the game, and additional rain expected throughout the night, get a quick lead and playing at least 4-1/2 innings was on top of every Sox fan's mind.  The Sox were hung with a loss by similiar weather in Boston two weeks ago after failing to get an early lead.

The Sox added three more runs in the fifth inning stringing together five hits including an rbi triple by Ray Durham.  Meanwhile Cal Eldred cruised through Cleveland's line up.  A dramatic sixth inning saw Cal Eldred facing Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome with the bases loaded, striking them both out to end the inning.  He left in the seventh inning with six strikeouts against one walk, allowing three runs and seven hits.  Kelly Wunsch finished the seventh for his ninth hold of the season, and Keith Foulke nailed down the victory pitching two scoreless innings allowing just one hit.

Same two teams at Comiskey Saturday evening.

Given a quick lead
