Huge Dinger for "W"

(May 13, 2000)

The obituaries were already being written.  The Sox's triumphant march through April would be a distant memory in Sunday's newspapers as the team dropped out of first place and into the depths more commonly reserved for their neighbors on Addison Street.  Two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and Lazarus has an answer, "No Way!!"

Jeff Abbott popped a wondrous two-run dinger in a pinch hit at-bat pushing his Sox teammates over the top to a dramatic 4-3 victory against Minnesota.  That distant groan was from one million Browns fans in Cleveland, currently occupying their time rooting for the Indians.  Tell them the 90's are over.

It must be noted that Carlos Lee was on first base setting the stage for Abbott's heroics.  He was there solely because of luck and hustle, safe at first base on a grounder that the infielder managed to reach but bobbled momentarily.  Only Lee's hustle prevented him from being out.

Mike Sirotka looked to be the tough-luck loser.  He pitched into the ninth inning but had nothing to show for it.  The solo shot dinger he gave up back in the third inning looked to be the difference.  He scattered seven hits with six strikeouts against one walk.   The Sox turned four double plays, which helped his cause immensely.

The top of the Sox batting order continued to struggle (Ray Durham 1 for 4, Jose Valentin 0 for 4), but the middle of the line up was able to pick them up.  All Sox runs came on dingers.  Magglio Ordonez hit a solo shot in the sixth; Carlos Lee did the same in the seventh.  Lee was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate.  Frank Thomas was 1 for 4 with one strike out.  Paul Konerko continued to struggle, another 0 for 4 performance with two strike outs.

Kelly Wunsch is the game's golden boy.  He got two outs in the ninth and earned the win.  Sirotka gets Miss Congeniality, again.

Fielder's gloves and $1.00 seats for the kids Sunday afternoon at Comiskey, ending the short homestand.  James Baldwin faces Brad Radke in the rubber game.
