Opening Night Fireworks!

(April 14, 2000)

What a glorious night to be a Sox fan!  Sox win, Cubs lose, Cleveland finally drops one, and Kansas City failed to pull another horse shoe out of their orifice, too.  Even the weather was perfect, an evening more typical of mid-June than mid-April.  A capacity opening day crowd (the largest at New Comiskey since April, 1994) witnessed an impressive Sox victory, 9-4 over the Anaheim Angels.

REAL baseball has returned to Chicago.

Frank Thomas was awesome again, greeted in his first at-bat by the cheers of Sox fans filling every corner of the park, crushing Ken Hill's pitch into the moat beyond the center field wall.  He finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 rbi.  Paul Konerko also went 2 for 4 including a two-run blast in the seventh inning.  Ray Durham had two sacrifice flies, collected three rbi's and snagged the best catch of the season in short right field to save a run in the first inning.  Craig Wilson got the start at shortstop for injured Jose Valentin, going 3 for 4 at the plate.  The banged up White Sox played flawless defense.  Who woulda thunked it?

Mike Sirotka battled out of jams in the first and fifth innings, allowing just one run and scattering seven hits.  Sean Lowe was impressive shutting down an Angels rally in the sixth.  Kelly Wunsch was perfect in the seventh.  Scott Eyre had nothing and was pulled without ever getting an out starting the eighth.  Jerry Manuel brought in Keith Foulke and the game was effectively over.  Foulke stuck out the first four batters he faced, pitching two perfect innings to nail down the Sox victory.

The post-game fireworks were glorious -- the perfect topper to an exciting evening at Comiskey Park.  It's been too long since we last reported that!

Let's Go Go-Go White Sox!  Chicago's Proud of You!!!  (Let's Hear It!)
