Sox sign Lee and Singleton

January 17th, from

After a quiet start to the New Year, the Chicago White Sox made a little noise Thursday, signing outfielders Carlos Lee and Chris Singleton to new contracts, avoiding arbitration with each player. Terms of both agreements were not announced by the club.

Lee, 25, who batted .269 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs in 150 games for the White Sox in 2001, inked a two-year deal. The right-handed hitter established career highs in doubles (33), triples (three) and stolen bases (17) and matched his career best in home runs. The Panamanian native became the first player in Major League history to hit an extra-inning grand slam in any interleague game, including the World Series, with his game winner on June 8 vs. the Cubs at Comiskey Park.

In three major-league seasons with the White Sox, Lee has averaged 21 home runs and 87 RBIs.

Singleton, 29, who hit .298 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs in 119 games last season, reached an agreement on a one-year contract. The left-handed hitting outfielder owns a career .283 average with 35 home runs and 179 RBIs over three seasons.

In 1999, Singleton placed sixth in the American League Rookie of the Year balloting.
