When Does Kopech Get Here?

May 5 vs. the Minnesota Twins

WSI Playdate Funtime:
Downfall
Easy call -- no pitching, fall down.

Short Take: Hector Santiago couldn't pitch, and so the White Sox lost to the Twins 8-4 in Chicago.

It was a festive Cinco de Mayo evening. Music and smiling faces filled the ballpark. The happy vibe changed to fatigued ennui though, after Hector Santiago started pitching. His ragged exhibition gave the Minnesota Twins an 8-4 victory over the White Sox.

Things got rough from the start: Joe Mauer singled to lead off, and a walk and three more hits handed the Twinkies a 3-0 lead. Santiago got through the second, but couldn't find it in the third. He gave up three more runs after a couple more walks, a homer and a double. The fourth deteriorated further as Santiago gave up two more walks. With one out, that was enough for Rick Renteria, who brought in Chris Volstad to stop the bleeding.

At that point it was 6-1 with two Minni-runners on base. Volstad promptly gave up a two-RBI double to Eddie Rosario to make it 8-1, and the crowd's attention drifted elsewhere.

That one run the Sox held was the result of a string of singles in the bottom of the first. With the Sox down 3-1 and the bases loaded with one out, Daniel "Roy Hobbs" Palka stepped to the plate. Anticipation grew as Palka worked into a 3-1 count, got his pitch, and Whack! It was hit hard, but right into a double play to end the inning and the threat.

Some noise was made in the seventh and ninth, when Tim Anderson hit solo homers. His two pokes, added to a run scored in the fifth on a double play, ultimately led to the final score of 8-4.

Oh, well. Your tireless TBGR correspondent was there and appreciated the great weather (possibly the first of the season) and the happy Cinco de Mayo vibe. Not much to appreciate about the pitching, though. Later in the game as I exchanged cash for a cold beer, I asked the pleasant lady at the Revolution stand if she could pitch. She demurred, saying she wasn't very good. "No problem," I told her, "Neither are they."

The Sun-Times carried a story in Saturday's edition pointing out the call among fans for Michael Kopech. Between Kopech, Cease, Hansen, and the rest, they sure sound good after watching games like this. Patience, patience, I know, but man -- this is tough to watch. 2020 can't get here soon enough.

Tim Anderson

Two homers are always fun. Now he needs some pitching to complete the package.
