Let's Do the Kansas City Palka

April 28 vs. the Kansas City Royals

WSI Playdate Funtime:
With Fulmer piloting the craft, the Sox fired their cannons at the Royals.

Short Take: The Sox ran all over the Royals, 8-0, behind Carson Fulmer's precision moundwork and Daniel Palka's breakout batwork.

Now, this is sweet. Kansas City has, for years, been the place where the White Sox have gone to await their doom. Today the Sox danced all around the Royals, winning 8-0 behind Carson Fulmer in the first game of a split double-header. Fulmer's had rough outings and hasn't consistently known where the ball's going when he throws it. Today, that wasn't a problem as he convincingly shut out the Royals.

The Sox danced, all right. This day was a Palka party, as in AAA call-up Daniel Palka. One hit short of the cycle, Palka went 4-for-5, including a three-run homer in the seventh. Palka was brought up to fill Avi Garcia's spot after Garcia went on the DL with a hamstring injury. Garcia was having a so-so season thus far, after breaking out last year. Now Palka explodes on the scene in his place -- wonder if Garcia knows the story of Wally Pipp?

Another bright star in this game was Carson Fulmer. Could Fulmer be showing us the stuff we've heard about for the past two years? Man, I hope so. Seven shutout innings pitched, scattering four hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. He worked quickly and confidently, reminding us of Mark Buehrle. The Sox need this guy to complement the wave of happy hurlers coming in the next year. Whatever you're doing Carson, keep doing it.

Palka's hot bat was not the only ingredient today. His three RBIs and three runs scored were important, of course, but five other runs came bounding in. In the second, Leury Garcia singled in the ubiquitous Palka, who was on third after getting on earlier with his first hit. That put the Sox on the board 1-0 to give Fulmer all the lead he would've needed.

Then in the fourth, Yolmer Sanchez whacked a three-run double, coming after Yoan Moncada had his own RBI single. This added up to a four-run fourth inning that put the Bridgeport Bashers up 5-0.

Then in the seventh, heartthrob Nicky Delmonico walked, Matt Davidson doubled, and Dancing Daniel Palka ka-boomed a three-run homer to put the game way out of reach for the feckless Royals.

Let's not forget Davidson, who's become Kansas City's nemesis. He went 3-for-5 today after his home-run parade in KC so far this season. In Greek mythology, Nemesis was the goddess dishing out retribution against the arrogant and self-satisfied. Davidson's not Greek, and he's not a goddess, but he keenly fills the role of nemesis against the Royals, who gave the Sox plenty of attitude for years.

Ahh, it's fun to watch and write about a win. Especially a well-done win like this. The matinee performance was lovely -- let's move on to the evening show and do it again.

Roll out the barrel, let's Palka!
