Twinkee Split

August 21st, 2017 vs Minnesota Twins

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Feeling Minnesota
Fulmer was feeling gloomy in that 2nd inning.

Short Take:  Fulmer struggles in Game 2, Sox settle for split against Twins.

After another solid outing by Carlos Rodon in a Game 1 victory over the Twins, the Sox sent 2015 first round pick Carson Fulmer to the mound for a Game 2 spot start looking for the sweep. Unfortunately for Carson and the Sox, this one was over pretty early. Fulmer REALLY fought his command most of the short outing and the Sox offense couldn't muster up a whole lot to bail him out.

The gate attraction for this game was a chance to get a look at Carson Fulmer's first MLB start. Despite struggling recently in Charlotte, the Sox called upon the young right hander to give them a spot start as the 26th man during a doubleheader. After a clean 1-2-3 first inning, Fulmer hit a brick wall in a disaster second. The command left Fulmer in this inning and never returned. When the dust settled on Carson Fulmer in the 2nd inning, he gave up 3 walks, 2 singles, and a pair of 3 run HRs from Jorge Polanco and Sox Killer Brian Dozier. That was all she wrote as Renteria mercifully yanked him after 1.1 IP and the game already out of hand at 6-0. I'm not an expert on pitching mechanics but Fulmer looked out of whack on the mound tonight. He had absolutely no idea where any of his pitches were going to go and it seemed wherever Kevan Smith set up, Fulmer's pitch went to the opposite side of the plate. Fulmer had been suffering through command issues in the 2nd half down in AAA and it seems he imported those problems into his 1st MLB start.

Dylan Covey came on in relief of Fulmer which is kind've like asking someone to put out a large fire with a tank of gasoline. Dylan gave up 3 more runs but to his credit, he gobbled up 4.2 innings which needed to happen tonight in order to avoid having a position player pitching. Dillon Gee completely stymied the Sox offense tonight in 6 innings of work. The lone offensive highlights for the White Sox against the Twins were a pair of solo HRs by Adam Engel and Nicky Delmonico who continues to scorch the ball since his callup.

This game was over pretty early and the reason to tune into the game was out of the game in the blink of an eye. The Twins put away the Sox in Game 2 by a score of 10-2 earning a split on the South Side. Ultimately, Carson Fulmer's future might be in the bullpen but he is still a young pitcher working through mechanics issues so its too soon to say. The Sox certainly have enough pitching depth in the farm system where a bullpen ceiling for Fulmer shouldn't hurt them in the long run. Tomorrow is another big night for the rebuild as Sox blue chipper Lucas Giolito makes his debut against Kyle Gibson in Game 3.

Game Notes-

-Carson Fulmer's line was 1.1IP, 6ER, 6H, 4BB, 0Ks Not pretty.

-Nicky Delmonico hit his 6th HR tonight. He is the quickest to 6HRs in franchise history.

-Carson Fulmer was the 26th man for the double header so he will likely be returned to Charlotte after the game.

-Yoan Moncada sat out Game 2 of the double header. Renteria didn't want to push it with his 1st game back from shin splints.

Carson City is going to have to be Charlotte for now.
