WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Oh, Nicky, You're So Fine...

August 16 at Los Angeles Dodgers

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Good game with a crappy ending.

Short Take:  But Nicky Delmonico's 2-homer game, and a solid start by Carlos Rodon, can't hold up to Jake Petricka's second consecutive meltdown; Dodgers walk off the Sox 5-4.

I repeat my assertion that watching the 2017 White Sox team CAN be fun, but I will clarify that with this: watching MOST of the team can be fun. This does not include the current Sox relief pitchers.

The Sox bullpen – primarily Jake Petricka - handed over the game to the Dodgers for the second night in a row, this time in the 9th inning. I didn't get to see last night's game, so Petricka obliged me by providing a repeat performance. Yeah, thanks, Jake. /sarcasm.

A nice efficient outing by Carlos Rodon (7-1/3 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 4 walks, 4 ks) went for naught. So did Nicky Delmonico's two home runs. We not exactly sure where Nicky Delmonico's been hiding all his life, but Sox fans are glad he's on our side right now.

In a start eerily similar to last night's game, Leury Garcia hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game off the Dodgers' Yu Darvish. Yesterday, Tim Anderson hit a homer on the 1st pitch off of Dodgers starter Alex Wood.

The Dodgers tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd thought when Forsythe doubled and advanced to 3rd on a fielder's choice. Rodon tried to go inside on Yasiel Puig; instead, it went all the way to the backstop - which is like 3 miles away at Dodger stadium. Forsythe scored to tie the game.

Darvish and Rodon matched each other on the mound for 6 innings - but Rodon kicked Darvish's butt at the plate. Rodon was 1/3 with his second single of the season, while Darvish looked like he'd never held a bat in his hands in his life. I'll just conveniently ignore Rodon's two at-bats where his attempts at bunting resulted in popup outs.

Jose Abreu hit his 22nd homer of the year to nudge the Sox ahead 3-2, and Delmonico's second dinger gave the Sox a little breathing room.

But given the state of the Sox bullpen – it sucks – can you guess how quickly a 4-2 lead evaporated in the 9th?

The 9th inning closer-by-committee performed thusly: Gregory Infante retired 1 hitter; Aaron Bummer was brought out for 1 hitter, gave up a single, and was pulled for Petricka. Petricka promptly gave up a double to the corner, scoring Bummer's base runner. With a 1-run lead, Petricka never got a single out. He gave up another single; then Yasiel Puig belted one to the outfield wall that scored 2 and sealed the walkoff.

The Sox head to Texas for a 4-game series against the Rangers, starting tomorrow at 7:05 pm CST. Reynaldo Lopez faces Tyson Ross.

Felt like watching a good team for 8 innings and then -poof-.
