Baby Bears Take Series and Crosstown Cup

July 27th versus Cubs

Sox Office Smash Hit:
All three Sox runs off solo homers

Short Take:   Three solo home runs were not enough to silence the Cubs or their annoying fans

The Sox faced the Cubs for the final time this season with a chance to even the series at 2 and keep the coveted Crosstown Cup on the South Side. Mike Pelfry looked good the first time through the Cubs lineup but they got to him the second time through it as the Sox fell to the Cubs 6-3.

After going out quietly the first two innings, Willy Garcia got the Sox on the board in the bottom of the third sending a John Lester cut fast ball to center. That 1-0 lead lasted exactly three outs as Anthony Rizzo answered with a leadoff solo homer in the top of the fourth. Wilson Contreras drew a walk and was brought home on a two-run homer off the batt of goofy-looking Kyle Schwarber to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

Jose Abreu brought the Sox within one as he homered in the bottom of the fourth but the Cubs got that run back the next frame as Albert Almora doubled to lead off the inning and was brought home on a Kris Bryant sac fly. The Cubs added one more in the top of the sixth as Wilson Contreras singled to lead off the inning, ending Mike Pelfry’s evening. David Holmberg came in and promptly gave up a triple to Schwarber, making the score 5-2 scrubs.

Aaron Bummer, making his major league debut, came in to pitch the top of the 8th and got two quick outs striking out Rizzo and inducing a ground-out from Contreras. Bummer’s ERA however skyrocketed to 9.0 as Baby Huey hit his second homer of the night, sending a fastball to deep right field. Jose Abreu got the Sox back on the board in the bottom of the ninth with his second home run of the evening (suck it Schwarbs), giving Sox fans something to cheer about while briefly shutting up the annoying cub fans in attendance. Enjoy your Crosstown Cup scrub fans, that’s the only trophy you’re seeing this season.

At least we didn't get swept
