Yankees Go Home, and Home, and Home...

June 28 vs New York Yankees

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Now You See Me
The Sox are but an illusion of an MLB team.

Short Take:  Yanks throw wet blanket on Carlos Rodon's 2017 debut, beat White Sox 12-3.

Not that the Yankees had to do much to spoil Carlos Rodon's 2017 debut - some of it Rodon did himself, with 6 walks issued in 5 innings. Along with his cohorts in the Sox bullpen, Sox pitchers issued 10 free passes to the Yankees in this game, and the Yankees made them pay for it.

Rodon struggled with command from the first inning. He walked leadoff hitter Brett Gardner, and then two wild pitches allowed Gardner to advance to 3rd. Gardner scored when Tim Anderson pulled Abreu off the bag with a bad throw. A couple more walks followed to load the bases. Rodon then gave up a single to Miguel Andujar, who was making his major league debut and who earned 2 RBIs along with the maiden hit.

So 1 hit, 3 walks, 1 error, and 3 runs (none earned) later, and the Yanks led 3-0. And yep, we were looking at another bullpen game, with Rodon on a pitch limit.

Rodon barely escaped further damage in the 3rd. After retiring the first two, he walked the next two. Andujar hit his 2nd single of his career, but Melky Cabrera nailed Chase Headly at the plate to end the inning.

The Sox finally got on the board in the 5th inning. Omar Narvaez singled and Adam Engel doubled off the center field wall, just missing a dinger. Carlos Sanchez walked, loading the bases. Melky came through with a single to left field to score 2 runs, and the Sox were back in it…but not for long.

On a pitch limit, Rodon was done for the night. Jake Petricka took over in the 6th, and was feeling generous tonight – he decided to give the Yanks back those 2 runs that Melky drove in, plus a couple more. Apparently sick of being at this game, Ricky Renteria went out to the mound to chat with Petricka, and then said something to home plate Hunter Wendelstedt and got booted from the game. Who can blame him? Yankees beast Aaron Judge then punctuated the inning by hitting a line drive rocket home run to make it 8-2 Yanks. After the 3rd out, Petricka also said something that also got him ejected from the game.

After that shellacking by the Yanks, the Sox hitters looked defeated, and Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.

And then the skies opened, and the wind blew, and lightening lit up the sky. But the game went on anyway. Even though the wind and rain forced two Yankees fielding errors in the 7th, the Sox couldn't take advantage of it, and left the bases loaded without making a dent in the lead.

The rain quickly dissipated and play went on without delay.

To add insult to injury, Sox reliever Michael Ynoa gave up 4 more runs in the 9th, including a homer to Didi Gregorious and a double to Andujar that each scored 2 runs.

In the top of the 9th, Adam Engel hit his 2nd career home run to lead off the 9th, but that was all the comeback the Sox would muster tonight, and the final score stood at 12-3.

Of note:

  • The Sox continued their 2017 tradition of being generous to the Yankee rookies. In his first career MLB at-bat today, Andujar singled and earned 2 RBIs. His results today: 3/4, 4 RBIs, a walk, a stolen base. Nice debut, rook…you're welcome. Love, the White Sox
  • Adam Engel made a highlight reel catch of a Ronald Torreyes fly ball to deep center, on an all-out sprint toward the CF fence with his back to home plate.

Last game of the Yankees series is tomorrow at 7:10 pm. James Shields faces Luis Cessa.
