June 23rd vs Oakland As

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Bored Games
A mostly uneventful return home

Short Take:   Sox collect two more hits but three less runs in loss to the As

The Sox returned home Friday night to face the Oakland As in the first game of a 10-game homestand. Mike Pelfry pitched well enough about two-thirds of the time but that last out proved continually elusive and was the Sox eventual downfall, losing 3-0 in front of 25,000.

In each of the first four innings Pelfry was able to get two quick outs but but in each of those innings the third batter reached base. Pelfry started the first striking out Matt Joyce and getting Matt Olson to ground out to third, only to follow that up with a walk to Jed Lowrie on four pitches. The next batter Khris Davis provided the only offense the As would need, sending a line drive over the wall in center and scoring two.

That trend would continue for the next several innings, as Pelfry let four runners reach base after the second out. He unfortunately broke that pattern in the top of the fifth when Matt Joyce led off the inning with a homer, sending Pelfry's sinker to center. Another walk that inning would end the night for Pelfry, pitching 4 2/3 innings of 4-hit ball, striking out 4 but walking 5.

The Sox meanwhile were stymied by As starter Jharel Cotton and his 5.02 ERA. Cotton held the Sox to just 3 singles scattered over five innings before being pulled with a blister on his thumb in the bottom of the sixth. The Sox had just two innings with multiple hits, those coming in the seventh and ninth. The Sox had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the ninth on Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreau singles, with Abreu eventually being forced out at second after a dropped popup to right. Matt Davidson sent a ball to the track in deep center with two on and two out but not quite far enough, landing in Jaycob Brugman's glove and ending the mini-rally. On the night the Sox offense recorded 7 hits, all singles.

Mike Shields takes the mound for the Sox in game 2 against Daniel Gosset, let's win one for #56.

The Sox left their bats in Minnesota.
