Reigning In Minnesota

June 22nd at Minnesota Twins

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Hard Rain
The rain and runs just kept pouring

Short Take:   Sox collect 9 runs on 18 hits to avoid the sweep

The Sox closed out their brief road trip in Minneapolis looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Twins. After a lengthy rain delay the Sox struck early and often, scoring 9 runs on 18 hits to defeat the Twinkies 9-0.

What was supposed to be an early 12:10 get-out-of-town game turned into a night game due to a 5-hour rain delay. When play finally started the Sox wasted no time getting to Twins starting pitcher Nik Turley, scoring one run for each hour of rain delay (take that Mother Nature). Tim Anderson started the hit parade with a single to center but was forced out at second on the next play as Melky Cabrera reached on a fielders choice. With Melky on first, Jose Abreau homered to center, scoring two and providing all the run support Jose Quintana would need. Avi Garcia followed that with a double to left and was brought home immediately afterward on a Todd Frazier home run to center. Matt Davidson singled to left but was forced out at second on a Yolmer Sanchez fielders choice. A Kevan Smith single to left signaled the end of the day for Turley, getting charged with 5 runs on 6 hits. Buddy Boshers came in to replace Turley and immediately gave up yet another single to Adam Engel, scoring Yolmer Sanchez. Tim Anderson, batting for the second time in the inning, flied out to deep center to end the inning. In total the Sox sent 10 men to the plate and collected 5 runs on 7 hits, not a bad way to start a game.

The fun continued in the top of the third as the Sox scored two more on three singles, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt, all of which would end the day for Buddy Boshers. Matt Belisle got Melky to ground out to end the inning with a score of 7-0 Sox.

Matt Davidson had himself a good evening, collecting 3 hits on 4 at-bats, including a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth that would make the score 8-0 Sox. The Sox added another in the top of the eighth as Matt Davidson doubled leading off the inning and was brought home on a Tim Anderson single. On the night the Sox collected 18 hits, with every batter except Yolmer Sanchez collecting a hit. Even Yolmer’s hitless night was productive, himself scoring a run and adding a sacrifice bunt that would put a runner in scoring position in the third.

Sox Starter Jose Quintana meanwhile was also having himself a great evening, throwing 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, scattering 5 hits and striking out nine with zero walks. Jake Petricka and Chris Beck combined to finish the job, throwing two scoreless innings.

Whatever the Sox did during that 5-hour rain delay they need to do before every game
