Sox Offense + Orioles Pitching Woes= Winning Baseball

June 15th Versus Orioles

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Afternoon Delight
There are few things more delightful than winning baseball on a summer afternoon

Short Take: Solid pitching and effective offense are the keys to a fine afternoon.

The Sox closed out a brief 4-game homestand against the Baltimore Orioles on a hot steamy Thursday afternoon, with the odds were in their favor facing the O’s shakey starter Chris Tillman and his 8.01 ERA. While most of their damage was done against relief pitching the Sox nonetheless managed to get the job done, winning 5-2 and going 3-1 on the series.

The best confidence-builder / ship-righter for a struggling pitcher has typically been to face the White Sox and this afternoon’s game looked like it would follow that pattern. Tillman has been horrendous in the first inning this season, allowing 13 runs on 16 hits and posting a first-inning ERA of 17.71. He lowered that ERA ever so slightly this afternoon as he was lights-out against the Sox in the first, pitching a 1-2-3 inning. The Sox loaded the bases in the second and had runners on first and second in the third but clutch hitting continues to elude them as they failed to plate a run either inning.

The game was scoreless into the fourth when Matt Davidson homered to left, his fourth home run in four games. It looked like the Sox would add to that lead with runners on first and third but ended up stranding two of many baserunners on the day.

Meanwhile Sox starter David Holberg was having himself a solid game, scattering four hits and giving up one run over 4 innings before getting pulled in the top of the fifth for Anthony Swarzak. The O’s would tie the game that inning as Celeb Joseph doubled home Jonathan Schoop. The only noise the Sox made in the fifth was vocal noise as manager Rick Renter and Avi Garcia were ejected arguing a called third strike.

Swarzak got into a bit of a jam in the top of the sixth, giving up a walk and a single with one out but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. The Sox big inning however came in the bottom of the frame as they scored 4 runs on three hits and four walks. Matt Davidson started the inning doubling to left and was joined on base by a walk to Yolmer Sanchez and a Kevan Smith single. An over-anxious Willy Garcia struck out but Melky Cabrera picked him up with a single to center, scoring Davidson and Sanchez. Jimmy Yacabonis came in to replace Tillman and promptly reloaded the bases, giving up a walk to Tim Anderson and allowing Kevan to score on a walk to Jose Abreau. Leary Garcia sent a ball deep to center, deep enough for Melky to tag up and score. End of six, 5-1 Sox.

The Sox bullpen gave up a handful of hits in the seventh and a Wellington Castillo solo shot but struck out two in the top of the ninth to bring home the win. Sox pitching on the day gave up 9 hits and two runs, while the offense scored five on 12 hits and 5 walks. More alarming is the 20 (!!!) they left on base but, hey, a win is a win.

Taking 3 of 4 against anyone is a good series
