Davidson's Grand Night

June 13th, 2017 vs. Baltimore Orioles

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The Natural
A majestic slam worthy of Roy Hobbs

Short Take:  Sox win their second in a row over the O's behind Matt Davidson's first career grand slam.

A day after adding a pair of power hitters to their growing minor league stockpile, the rebuilding White Sox looked to take care of business on the big league field as well. It just so happened that flexing some big time power was the deciding blow as Matt Davidson and the Sox made it two in a row over the Orioles winning 6-1.

Struggling White Sox starter Derek Holland got off to a rough start in the first as he was greeted rudely by the Orioles. A double from Rickard, a sac bunt by Jones, and then an RBI single from Manny Machado staked Baltimore to a quick 1-0 lead. Derek Holland would rebound and end up keeping the O's in check the rest of the way. Derek used his curveball effectively and got some double play balls when he needed them frustrating Orioles hitters. Holland would end up pitching six innings, giving up only the one run to the high powered Orioles offense. Overall, this was a very nice rebound for Holland from his two poor outings on the previous road trip.

The White Sox offense got going in the bottom of the 4th. Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreu lead off the inning with back to back singles and Avisail Garcia once again came through with a big 2 RBI double making it 2-0 Sox. Avi continues down his path to Miami for the All Star Game. Seriously, if you have the time, make sure to sneak in a few online votes for Avi this week. He is more than deserving of the honor. As big as Avi's hit was, the knockout blow came in the bottom of the 6th. Orioles pitcher Alec Asher began to unravel with a single allowed to Abreu, a HBP to Avi Garcia, and then a walk to Frazier. I was stunned when Buck Showalter left him in to face Matt Davidson with the bases loaded and nobody out. The decision to stick with Asher would burn the O's to the ground as Davidson picked on a 3-2 cutter on the inside half of the plate and vaporized a baseball 435 feet to LF. It was Davidson's first career grand slam and team leading 12th HR as the Sox took a commanding 6-1 lead that they never relinquished.

The brief homestand is off to a good start for the South Siders as they improved to 2W-0L. After getting knocked around Camden Yards earlier in the season by Baltimore, the White Sox are returning the favor to the struggling O's in a big way. The Pale Hose look to make it 3 in a row tomorrow as they'll send Miguel Gonzalez to the bump to square off against Dylan Bundy.

Game Notes-

-Derek Holland went 6.0 innings, 8H, 1R, 1ER, 5Ks, 2BBs. It was the first quality start in the last 10 games for Sox starting pitching.

-Matt Davidson's first career grand slam had an exit velocity of 112 mph and carried 435 feet per StatCast.

-Avisail Garcia went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.

-The Orioles have now lost 11 straight road games.

-Alen Hanson made his first start in a Sox uniform. He went 0 for 4.
