The One That Got Away...

June 8 at Tampa

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Groundhog's Day
Same stuff over and over and over again...

Short Take: Questionable defense early followed by a too little too late comeback late is not the recipe for winning baseball.

Yeah so that happened. Maybe you even watched. I mean the site was down so you couldn't talk about the rebuild or anything else. I mostly watched but went for a walk early on after the Sox fell behind 3-0. There wasn't much excitement in this game to be honest. the Sox fell behind 6-0 when Derek Holland failed to get out of the 5th and though they Sox managed to hit a couple of big bombs to make it close they went on to lose 7-5.

As mentioned above, Holland just didn't have it. He gave up 9 hits and three walks over 4.2 and yielded 3 homers in the process. Two of the blasts were to Derek (no relation) Norris. After his second, Peter Bourjos followed with a solo shot of his own. Holland came back out for the 5th but after giving up a walk and a single he left with two outs and men on second and third. Honestly it wasn't all his fault. The defense may not have been charged with any errors but there were several hits that could have been outs if the fielder in question had simply been a bit more alert or stronger defensively. Adam Engel misread a hard hit humpback liner and then let it bounce off his chest for a double that drove in the first run. Later Yolmer Sanchez failed to corral a popup and that runner would come around to score also. The bullpen was solid though Infante gave up a solo homer for an insurance run in the 8th after the Sox had closed to within one, but Minaya was very solid, going 2.1 of no hit 2 K baseball to keep the score reasonable and give the offense a chance.

About that offense. As bad as the Sox defense was the Rays almost gifted the Sox a run in the 3rd when Willie Garcia doubled to deep right. He advanced to third on a poor relay throw that bounced away from the Tampa infielder who tried to nab it. Said infielder then turned and fired wide of third as Garcia slid in safe. As the ball rolled up the line in left-field foul territory, Willie got up and broke for home. Sadly another Tampa fielder was well positioned to back up the play and Willie was out by a few feet. He would have been safe at third with one away if he'd just stayed put, but can't really fault the decision to go for that "little league homer". That run turned out to be pretty big as later Avisail Garcia drilled a 455' bomb to center with 2-men on. Frazier then drilled his own 2-run bomb in the 8th off the left-field fair pole that brought the Sox to within that elusive run Willie had failed to score earlier in the game. Not that it would matter in the end as the Sox went meekly in the 9th.

Well like they say, tomorrow's another day and another shot at redemption. The Sox are moving on to Cleveland, not that anyone in that city will be paying much attention with the Cavs on the verge of elimination. Come to think of it that might spike attendance and interest. Game time is 6:10 in Chicago with Miguel Gonzalez taking the mound for the Sox. he;s been in a bit of a funk too recently so hopefully he'll turn it around. Always nice to take a bite out of the toons whenever we can.

 Coulda, shoulda, woulda, didn't...sigh...
