WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Sox Flounder and Are Crappie

June 7 at Tampa Bay Rays

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Open Water
One of the most boring movies I've ever seen. Just like this game.

Short Take:   Sox fielders harpoon Mike Pelfrey's start (again), Rays beat Sox 3-1.

Ok, no more seafood puns, I promise. Hey, during games like this, a gal's gotta entertain herself.

Slop, slop, and more slop. (Oops, was that another pun?) The Sox lost to the Rays, 3-1. It was a rather ordinary game with a semi-typical loss for our boys in black an offense unable to figure out a pitcher making his major league debut, Jacob Faria. What new?

Starter Mike Pelfry pitched a decent game, but Sox fielders made a series of bobbles in one inning that led to 3 Rays runs. Add that to the fact that the Sox offense couldn't do much against the Rays pitching, and you get another yawner of a game with a predictable ending.

Actually, the White Sox gave me a brief shot of espresso when they scored in the 1st inning. Leury Garcia led off with a single, stole second, and then came home when Jose Abreu poked an outside pitch through the 1st base/2nd base hole.

That was promising, but it was a promise that was not kept.

In the 3rd, the Rays plated all the runs they'd need. Pelfry gave up a single to Evan Longoria followed by a double to Logan Morrison. He issued an intentional walk to Colby Rasmus, loading the bases. Tim Beckham then singled to Avisail Garcia, and Longoria scored to tie the game. Garcia bobbled the ball, allowing Morrison to score as well. Bobble. Then Garcia threw the ball to home, allowing Beckham to take 2nd. Bobble, bobble. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Frazier fielded a hard-hit grounder by Robertson. Colby Rasmus sped home from 3rd, and Frazier's throw was too far off the line. Sox catcher Kevan Smith couldn't bring the ball back in time, and Rasmus was called safe. Bobble, bobble, bobble. Had Renteria appealed, Rasmus *might* have been called out. Yeah, I'll add a "bobble" to the list for Renteria's lack of asking for review. Bobble, bobble, bobble, bobble.

The Rays were probably thrilled with the performance of starter Faria, - 6.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 5 Ks and 1 walk. And Sox hitters only managed 2 hits after their run-scoring 1st. But there were no thrills for Sox fans.

Once again, Mike Pelfry pitched decently, but took the loss. Solid fielding and basic good baseball might have given him a different outcome. I will say that Dan Jennings turned in a solid 2 innings of relief with 3 Ks. He's looked pretty good lately.

Final game of this series against Tampa is tomorrow at 6:10 CT, Derek Holland vs. Jake Odorozzi.
