Greinke Feeling

May 22 at Arizona

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Run Lola Run
The day had multiple scenarios for the writer and it still didn't end well.

Short Take:   Zack Greinke cools off the Sox, nearly goes the distance in a rough start to the series with the Diamondbacks.

Fun fact: my friend had an idea months ago to go to this entire series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It wasn't until late last night when I definitively knew his job wouldn't allow him to take the trip. So I stayed home and if Monday's game was any indication, at least some money proved to be worth keeping. Had I gone to the desert, I would have witnessed to a 5-1 White Sox loss.

Game-time temperature was 103 degrees and if you prefer offense to pitching, the air was initially the only thing hot about this contest. The first three innings featured no runs thanks to the stellar pitching of Miguel Gonzalez and Zack Greinke. Gonzalez was nearly disserviced in the second inning when Jose Abreu committed an error, the latest indication that the Cuban slugger probably should be a designated hitter going forward. Luckily, Gonzalez pitched over the flub.

Gonzalez wasn't so fortunate in the fourth. Paul Goldschmidt had a one-out base hit and Chris Owings walked with two outs. Daniel Descalso then clubbed a three-run homer to center field that proved to be the difference in the game. A fifth consecutive defeat for Gonzalez was on its way.

Leury Garcia got one run back on a fifth-inning solo blast that accounted for the only productive hitting for the Sox. That got wiped out when Goldschmidt took Gonzalez yard to lead off the sixth. The Diamondbacks then loaded the bases in a sequence started by Jake Lamb's triple that went all the way to the 413 sign in right center. Though only Lamb scored, it happened when Tim Anderson made a low throw home that bounced in front of Omar Narvaez, giving the Diamondbacks the game's final run and Anderson an error.

No matter what the Sox did on the mound or in the field though, it wouldn't have mattered. Greinke pitched like the big-money pitcher he is, mixing speeds and pitches to throw Sox hitters off. He struck out 12 while pitching a four-hitter and came within one out of a complete game. Even after Abreu's double chased him from the game, Archie Bradley needed just one pitch to get Avisail Garcia to ground out to second and end the game.

After the offensive outburst in Seattle, it was unrealistic to expect it to carry over to a new location. Greinke earning his contract didn't make it any easier. But another rough outing for Gonzalez and shoddy defense are things the Sox can control. No one is going to feel sorry for them if they can't pitch well or play error-free baseball.

The second game that would have taken place on my trip will be Tuesday. Dylan Covey starts for the Sox while Patrick Corbin gets the ball for the Snakes. Game time is 8:40. At least I just have to adjust the regular time I watch the Sox and not my internal clock.

Hard to get excited when the bats don't give you reason for enthusiasm.
