Routing the Royals

April 25th, 2017 vs. Kansas City Royals

Sox Office Smash Hit:
The White Sox were hunters of Royals pitching. No infared required.

Short Take:   Sox flex offensive muscle for second straight night and beat KC 10-5.

A Tuesday tilt at 35th & Shields between Royals ace Danny Duffy and Sox replacement pitcher Dylan Covey seemed pretty lopsided towards KC on paper. Throw in the White Sox historical struggles against the Royals in recent years and the task seemed even taller. However, this night the Pale Hose were up to the task behind an onslaught of offense as the Sox racked up 10 runs on 14 hits to rout the Royals by a final score of 10-5.

Kansas City struck immediately against Dylan Covey in the 1st inning on an RBI single from Salvador Perez giving KC an early 1-0 lead. The Sox would load the bases in the bottom of the inning and Leury Garcia struck a sharply hit line drive into LF that plated one run. However, the inning ended on an ill-advised send of Matt Davidson who was out from here to Oak Lawn as he tried to evade the tag at home. This is what we call a "bad send" folks and Capra has had a few this young season. The Royals answered back in the top half of the 2nd with an RBI from Alex Gordon but again, the Sox were able to even things up in the bottom half of the inning at 2-2 on an RBI sac fly from Todd Frazier.

The Sox took the lead in the 4th and never looked back. Leury Garcia once again would come through with an RBI hit as he smashed a double deep off the CF wall. Tim Anderson would follow with an RBI single driving Leury home making it 4-2 White Sox. Covey's day was done in the Top of the 5th and I thought this was an excellent move by Renteria. Dylan was all over the place with his control, walking batters, and falling behind. Having a rested bullpen in his back pocket thanks to Miguel Gonzalez, Ricky wasted no time wisely going to it early in this game despite Covey not reaching 5 innings. It could have killed their momentum to give back the lead in a futile attempt for Covey to chase down a win. A rested bullpen is a worthless asset if you never use it. Since bullpen management was an area that Robin lacked good instinct, this was refreshing to see.

The South Siders piled on in the bottom of the 5th. Jose Abreu lead off with a slapped line drive single to RF followed by a laser beam line drive double to left center from Todd Frazier which made it 5-2 White Sox. The Sox weren't done yet as Yolmer Sanchez tripled home Frazier extending the lead to 6-2 and ending Danny Duffy's night at 4 2/3 innings. This was easily one of the best games the Sox ever had against him. The offensive fun wasn't over as the White Sox added two more runs against KC's bullpen on a double from Omar Narvaez in the 7th making it 8-2. The bludgeoning of the KC Royals lasted into the 8th inning as well with Todd Frazier's second RBI double of the game making it 9-2. Avi Garcia would put a final exclamation point on the offensive night for the Sox with a ringing double of his own into the LF corner to drive home Frazier making the score a whopping 10-2. The Royals would go on to score a few garbage runs in the 9th off of Sox mop up man Chris Beck making the final score 10-5 but hey, even Chris Beck can close out a game with a 10-2 lead.

It's been a roller coaster of a homestand for the White Sox offense as they went from being blanked by Clevleand in back to back days to putting up back to back days of double digit runs. After watching both series, I can say that I highly prefer the latter. What's really been encouraging is the meat and potatoes of the Sox lineup like Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu, Todd Frazier, and Melky Cabrera are starting to heat it up after some sluggish starts. The rebuilding White Sox are now 10W-9L and going for the sweep tomorrow against the hated Royals. After years of torment at their hands, it would be extra sweet to send them out of Chicago without a win. Jose Quintana looks to bring his broom tomorrow as he takes on Nate Karns at 1:05pm on the South Side.

Game Notes-

-Leury Garcia was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. He is now hitting .318 on the season.

-Todd Frazier was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, 2 doubles, 1 BB, and 3R.

-Dan Jennings, Anthony Swarzak, and Nate Jones covered a combined 4 scoreless innings.

-Prior to the game, the Sox placed Zach Putnam on the 10 Day DL and recalled Chris Beck who pitched the 9th inning and gave up 2HRs and 3 earned runs.

I do enjoy crushing the Royals into a fine blue powder.
