Sox Squeak by Tribe

April 12 at Cleveland Indians

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Pitch Perfect
Well, not really--but with this team, sometimes ya gotta get pretty close to perfect pitching to win.

Short Take:   Holland is nearly flawless and Sox dredge up enough to edge out Tribe in Cleveland 2-1.

Who thought Derek Holland might be a good addition to the White Sox? Anyone? Bueller? Ok, we know he’s just holding a place in the starting rotation while the Sox – ahem - “rebuild”. But so far, I’ll put him on the plus side of the off-season acquisitions. He pitched well in his start last week, and tonight against the reigning American League Champs, Holland allowed 1 hit in 6 innings and got the win as the Sox beat Cleveland 2-1.

And it’s a good thing he was on tonight, because the Sox only mustered 4 hits against Cleveland starter Danny Salazar and the Indian bullpen.

The Sox scored all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning. Cody Asche walked and advanced to 3rd on an Avisail Garcia ground-rule double. Then Matt Davidson singled to left to drive in both runners and give the Sox an early 2-0 lead.

And thus stayed the score for the longest time. Holland actually took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, when Francisco Lindor broke it up with a double. But the Tribe couldn’t score then, and Holland left after the 6th having thrown a gem of a game.

Sox newbie reliever Anthony Swarzak threw a scoreless 7th. But the Indians chipped away at the lead in bottom of the 8th when Nate Jones gave up a single to Carlos Santana and a double to Lindor. One fielder’s choice later, and Santana crossed the plate, making it 2-1 Sox.

But Dave Robertson set down the Indians in order in the 9th, throwing first pitch strikes followed by nasty curves that seemed too tempting for the Tribe to lay off.

A nice win for the Boys in Black, especially after the Cleveland walk-off last night.

The Sox play the last in this series again Cleveland tomorrow at 5:10 CST. Miguel Gonzalez is set to pitch against Josh Tomlin.

Although years of losing baseball finds me jaded, I still want the good guys to win.
