Friday Night Suckitude...

April 7 Vs Twins

Sox Office Smash Hit:
Pearl Harbor
It sucked just a little bit more than I miss you...

Short Take: Holland pitches well but the Sox manage only one run.

You know the first inning tonight was kind of fun - well to a point anyway. The Sox were slamming the ball all over the park with back to back to back singles and a stolen base too. But the Twinkies ran down a couple of deep drives to the wall and the Sox only managed one sucky run. Sol good we thought, lots of time to score some more. We'll be fine, but on the game went and on the game went and on... and... well.. it never happened. Kind of like that movie title sitting over there on the side the Sox just missed the mark in this one and went on to lose 3-1.

Actually probably the biggest surprise of the night was Derek Holland who pitched a solid 6 innings and even came out for the 7th. He ended up getting charged with 3 runs, two of them earned on a mere four hits and a walk while striking out five. The Sox defense did its usual middle inning screw up thing when Avi Garcia, Jose Abreu and Tyler Saladino surrounded a popup and then watched it bounce off Avi's mitt and land on the grass. That led to the tying unearned run scoring and from there it was all downhill. Holland gave up an earned run on a hard hit double in the 6th and then was pulled with no one out and a man on first in the 7th. Nate Jones gave up a double down the left field line that a fan grabbed hoping to prevent another run scoring but the umps awarded home anyway. That was the final run the Twins scored, but it's not like the Sox were lighting it up offensively anyway.

As mentioned above, the Sox looked great in the first and if not for two fantastic running, tumbling catches at the wall in center would have easily scored four. Alas of the 5 hits they managed to get off Twins' starter Phil Hughes 3 of them came in the first in the form of singles and they were sandwiched between those two great catches. They managed a grand total of four hits the next 8 innings and though they took back to back walks in the ninth those too were the only walks they managed and they came with two outs. A meekly hit ground ball later and the game (like the movie in the theme pic) was finally, mercifully over.

On a positive note, the bullpen was solid after Nate Jones gave up the double. Tommy Kahnle had another solid outing and Zach Putnum pitched a 1-2-3 8th. Still the story of the night was the Sox lack of offense and the excellent defense by the Twins - especially in the outfield where they actually had two more very nice catches other than the ones already mentioned. Well can't win them all, just wish they wouldn't suck as much as this one did to watch. Probably just a bit more than I miss you. Ah well tomorrow is another game and another chance to win an Oscar. Same two teams go at it at 1:10 in Chicago with Miguel Gonzalez taking the mound for the Sox for the first time this year. Maybe he'll throw another solid game and maybe this time the offense won't let him down.
