A Rodon Masterpiece

September 25 at Cleveland Indians

Toon Squad Update:
Rodon was the Man of Steel today

Short Take: Rodon, Robertson shut out the Tribe.

Carlos Rodon was in need of a turnaround. After a brilliant August and early September, his last two starts were pretty bad. Today, Rodon showed the brilliance and promise of his young career. Carlos and David Robertson shut out the Indians as the Sox cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Rodon had everything working today. Through the first four innings, the Indians managed just one walk. But Toon starter Josh Tomlin was matching Rodon pitch for pitch. The Sox finally broke through in the top of the 5th. Todd Frazier shot a single to center. After two were out, Frazier stole second. Carlos Sanchez came through with a base hit, and the Sox led 1-0.

Brandon Guyer tallied the first Indian hit in the bottom of the 5th. Coco Crisp walked, and Rodon was in trouble. Chris Gimenez sacrificed the runners to second and third. Rodon then got a short fly ball to right off the bat of Michael Martinez, and the runners could not advance. Then Rajai Davis struck out, and the shutout remained intact.

In the top of the 7th, Justin Morneau reached on Tribe shortstop Michael Martinez's throwing error that pulled first baseman Carlos Santana off the bag. With one out, Avi Garcia and Omar Narvaez each singled, loading the bases. 5th inning hero Carlos Sanchez came through again with a sacrifice fly to center, and the Sox led 2-0.

The Sox got one more insurance run in the top of the 9th off Indians reliever Zach McAllister. Frazier walked and stole second again, going to third on a bad throw by backup catcher Adam Moore. Narvaez dumped a single to left that put the Sox up 3-0. Carlos Rodon finished the day with 11 strikeouts, surrendering only two hits and three walks. Rodon and Robertson struck out the final six Indians.

The Sox return home for the final homestand of the year. Monday's 7:10 pm start against the Tampa Bay Rays features James Shields against Drew Smyly. The broadcast is over Comcast Sports Net Plus.

That's all folks:
A promising penultimate game for a young Sox starter.
