Royals rake Rodon for 8-3 win

September 19 vs. Kansas City

Toon Squad Update:
Papa Smurf
Those baby blue KC jerseys are comical.

Short Take: Three KC HRs knock Carlos off his recently stellar game.

Did I miss the Bears game for this?

Actually, I happily realized at about 7:00 p.m. that the Sox played a day game, so I don't have to miss watching whatever delights the Beloved have in store for us. I can instead power-watch the DVRed Sox vs. Kansas City, then report this for you to ignore tomorrow morning. And the Sox's hottest pitcher was going for us -- what could go wrong?

It's Carlos Rodon, not necessarily Chris Sale or Jose Quintana, who has been on fire for the past month-plus. But his magic left him, hopefully just temporarily, as the Royals knocked him around for six earned runs before chasing him with no one out in the fifth. In contrast, Yordano Ventura went the distance while giving up just three runs on nine hits.

If you watched the Sox broadcast, you'd presume all is well in Soxville. Todd Frazier is near 100 RBI, as is Jose Abreu. Big wow. Don't get me wrong, 40 homers and 100 RBIs are significant even in the era of WAR. And now that Abreu's got 25 homers, I'd even grant the he had a good year statistically. The fact that they both did their best work after we were far out of contention is worth noting, and I suppose it would've been legitimately impressive if only so many of their teammates didn't suck. They'll both be back next year unless there's a total sell-off. They're not the problem with this team, etc. Will Hahn try to compete again despite slim prospects of success? Or will the rebuilding finally begin? He and his bosses say we'll know soon, but I don't believe even that.

WSI's
That's all folks: Rodon hits a speed bump on his way to elite leftidom.
