Bring Out the Gatorade Cooler!

September 15 vs. Cleveland Indians

Toon Squad Update:
There's no need to fear!, Carlos here!

Short Take: †Sox and Indians pitchers duel until the 9th, when Carlos Sanchezí bloop single walks the Tribe off, for a 2-1 win (and series win)

Hey Ė donít look now, but the Sox just pulled off a series win against the Indians! The Sox beat the Tribe 2-1 in todayís day game - thanks to Carlos Sanchez, who got to wear the Gatorade cooler contents after his walk-off winning hit.

Sox starter James Shields is pretty dang good, when heís good. Is it the change in catcher (now Omar Narvaez)? Did Coop fix Ďem? We donít know, but we like this version better. His line of 6 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 3 walks, and 8 Ks is much more what we expect from one of our starters, and it was only marred by a Jose Ramirez solo home run in the 3rd inning.

A solo homer by the red-hot Jose Abreu in the 4th tied the game, but after that the Indians pitching staff held our Sox scoreless for most of the game. Fortunately, the Sox bullpen parade of Chris Beck, Dan Jennings, Nate Jones, and Dave Robertson kept the Tribe scoreless as well.

Robertsonís 9th was, well, interesting. Perhaps Iím just cherry picking, but I canít recall the last time the guy pitched a 1-2-3 inning. After a hit, a fieldersí choice, a strikeout and a walk, Robertson did manage to strike out Coco Crisp with runners on 1st and 3rd to end the inning with the score tied. But I could do without the 9th inning dramatics, which seems to be fairly frequent whenever Robertson pitches.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Narvaez led off with a single. Leury Garcia (remember him?) replaced Narvaez as a pinch runner. Leury stole 2nd base when Avisail Garcia struck out. And then Carlos Sanchez hit a bloop single that dropped between three Indians fielders into right field. Leury raced around to score from 2nd. Game over, and the Sox racked up a series win against the ALC-leading Indians.

And now, Iím going to go turn off the tv, the radio, and the internet, so I can avoid all coverage of that other team on the north side of Chicago, whose magic number to clinch their division is 1 - and theyíre playing at home tonight. There might be a celebration, and perhaps riots - although someone probably should remind their fans that the big prize isnít theirs yet.

The Sox headed to Kansas City to duel the Royals tomorrow at 7:15; Chris Sale faces Ian Kennedy.

WSI's That's All, Folks: †Being the Underdog seems to fit the White Sox, at least against Cleveland in September.
