Philly Split

August 24th, 2016 vs Philadelphia Phillies

Toon Squad Update:
Scrooge McDuck
Time to swim in the naming rights money

Short Take:   9th inning rally falls short as Phillies split series and win 5-3

On a night when the Sox announced a poorly received stadium naming rights deal, the team followed it up with another flat offensive performance against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Personally, I would sell the naming rights to a toilet lid manufacturer if it meant getting a couple more run producers in this lineup. A late 9th inning rally made things interesting in this one but the Sox ultimately fell to the Phillies 5-3.

James Shields did not pitch well tonight but he wasn't horrible either especially when you consider his performances in the 3 outings prior to this one. James put the Sox in an early 2-0 hole in the 2nd inning by giving up a run scoring single to Altherr and an RBI double to Freddy Galvis. It wouldn't be a Shields start of recent vintage without giving up a couple of taters. Fortunately, Shields limited them to solo shots in the 3rd to Cesar Hernandez and to Tommy Joseph in the 7th. To the credit of Shields, it looked like it was going to be another short outing for him tonight but he collected himself and managed to give the Sox 6 innings. If it wasn't for the Joseph HR, it would have gone in the books as a quality start.

The Sox couldn't get much going against Eickhoff in this game. The way the first 5 innings against him went, it felt like another complete game shutout against the South Siders was in the cards. However, Dioner Navarro would crack the scoreboard with a 2 run shot in the 6th inning making it 4-2. Things didn't improve much offensively for the Sox against the Phillies bullpen until the 9th inning. Abreu continued his torrid hitting with a sharp single to CF, Frazier walked, and then Avi Garcia slapped a base hit down the line in RF for an RBI making it 5-3. The rally against Phillies closer Jeanmar Gomez came to a halt as Dioner Navarro grounded out weakly to end the threat and the game.

Overall, this was kind've a sleepy outing for the Sox at the ballpark formerly known as US Cellular Field. It's the dog days of the season with 2 teams jockeying for a protected draft pick. Considering the Phillies are barely fielding an MLB roster, it was disappointing that the Sox had to settle for a series split. Ultimately, it's hard to muster outrage when the 2016 season has been in hospice care for a month. Now we simply wait for September callups to give us some possible hope for the future. The Mariners come to town tomorrow for a 4 game set as they look to keep their wild card hopes alive.

Game Notes-

-Matt Albers pitched a rare scoreless outing with 2Ks in the 7th inning.

-Avi Garcia went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

-James Shields final line was 6 innings, 4ER, 7H, 6Ks, 4BBs.

-Anthony Ranaudo will get his 3rd start of the season tomorrow against the Mariners.

That's all folks:
Might as well win that 10th protected draft pick.
