Oakland Starter is Sox Kryptonite

August 19 vs Oakland Athletics

Toon Squad Update:
Caspar the Not-So-Friendly Ghost
For the sole purpose of saying "Booooooooo..."

Short Take: Sox get whomped 9-0 by Oakland starter Kendall Graveman, but James Shields is the villain on Superhero Night at the Cell.

Leave it to the 2016 White Sox to break up the Oakland Athletic's 5-game losing streak. It was pretty clear what happened - letís compare todayís pitching:

  • Oakland starter Kendall Graveman: complete game shutout (first career shutout), 2-hitter, 4 Ks, no walks.
  • Sox starter James Shields: 4.2 IP, 8 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), 3 walks, 3 Ks, 3 home runs.
  • Rest of Sox bullpen: 4.1 IP, 2 runs, 2 ER, 4Ks, 1 walk.

Need I say more? Probably not. The score alone is painful enough. Iíll keep it short.

Athletics hitters feasted on Shields, who gifted them their 1st run in the 1st inning when he managed to walk #9 hitter Max Muncy with bases loaded. In the 3rd, Khris Davis hit a long 2-run homer into the left field bleachers, and the As led 3-0.

Shields didnít make it out of the 5th inning. After getting the first two outs, he gave up a solo homer to Stephen Vogt, then a Davis double, followed by a homer by Yonder Alonso to make it 6-0. He then walked Marcus Semien, but got Ryon Healy to ground out. However, shortstop Tim Anderson one-hopped the throw to 1st, and Jose Abreu acted afraid of it and missed the pick, allowing Semien to score all the way from 1st. It just seems when things are going poorly, they go poorly all the way around. Shields exited the game with a 7-0 deficit and departed to the song of boobirds cooing from the stands.

He was replaced by Matt Albers, who gave up another run in the 6th when Danny Valencia doubled and Vogt hit a blooper into left near the foul line, scoring Valencia. 8-0 As. Yawn.

In the meantime, Kendall Graveman held the Sox to 2 hits over 9 innings, cruising through our not-so-mighty lineup and mostly inducing a bunch of ground balls that made our overanxious Sox hitters look like Little Leaguers hitting against an MLB pitcher.

Tommy Kahnle came in for some garbage time work in the 7th and 8th and held the As scoreless. Michael Ynoa pitched the 9th and forked over another run.

I had an event on Saturday morning that I needed to arise at zero-dark-thirty on Saturday, so I went off to do a couple of things to get ready. I came back to the TV just in time to see Adam Eaton getting doubled off first base, after he singled (only the 2nd hit of the game). When it rains, it pours.

And Graveman set the Sox down in order in the 9th. Congrats to him on a well-pitched game.

As a Sox fan Iím rapidly approaching the ďwho caresĒ stageÖbut Iím not there yet. If you still care, the Sox continue the series against Athletics tomorrow at 6:10; Chris Sale vs. Ross Detweiler.

That's all folks:
This team is rapidly fading away.
