Broken Shield

August 7 vs Baltimore Orioles

Toon Squad Update:
Punisher
Beaten down to a bloody pulp

Short Take: Oriole power returns with a vengeance.

The Oriole offense is not used to being shut down, but Carlos Rodon did just that last night. Today Oriole power returned with a vengeance, and James Shields was the victim. Too many hit batters, to many pitches from behind in the count, and the Orioles clobbered the White Sox 10-2.

Manny Machado was the main Oriole villain. Smashing three homers in the first three innings, Machado made mince meat of out of Sox pitching. If you showed up late in the bottom of the 3rd inning today, the Sox were already down by 10 runs and the Oriole offense was done. Shields did not even finish the 2nd inning, and tomato can Matt Albers was roughed up for four hits and the last two Oriole runs.

Jose Abreu and Carson Fulmer were the only bright spots for the Sox today. Abreu seems to be getting his batting eye back, laying off unhittable pitches, and driving pitches in the strike zone for hits. Abreu went 3 for 4 with a home run. Fulmer challenged the strike zone today and turned in 2⅓ innings of scoreless ball. Todd Frazier plated the only other Sox run today with a sacrifice fly in the 4th.

This brief home stand is over, and the Sox get a Monday off. The Sox travel to a struggling Kansas City team that has just tied for third place in the AL Central. Chris Sale faces KC hothead Edinson Volquez on Tuesday over Comcast Sports Net. Game start is 7:15 pm.
