Tigers Roar Past Sox

August 2nd, 2016 at Detroit Tigers

Toon Squad Update:
The look on the face of Sox fans.

Short Take:   Charlie Tilson injured in first game, Shields and Sox bullpen rocked for 11 runs as Sox fall in Detroit opener.

Charlie Tilson made his MLB debut in CF for the White Sox tonight in the opener of a 3 game series in Detroit. The Wilmette, IL native and New Trier grad also happened to grow up rooting for the White Sox which should have made the debut story even better. If you missed it, Charlie was acquired from the Cardinals over the weekend in exchange for Zach Duke. He even got a hit in his first AB. It was a hard single laced just out of the reach of the diving Ian Kinsler. Miguel Cabrera patted him on the shoulder and congratulated him on his first hit while his parents looked on from the stands. Great story right? Wrong. The good feelings ended a couple innings later. If you needed any confirmation that Sox fans aren't allowed to enjoy anything this year, Charlie Tilson laying in a crumpled injured heap in RF sure hammered the point home with extreme prejudice. Yes folks, Tilson is hurt already and James Shields streak of 6 straight quality starts came to an end as the red hot Tigers beat the Sox 11-5 at Comerica Park.

The game began with some pretty good pitching from both sides. The Sox had some mild early threats that Sanchez stifled. After 3 scoreless innings for both pitchers, the Sox would get on the board first in the Top of the 4th against Anibal Sanchez. Jose Abreu hit a ringing 1 out double into the RF corner. Abreu's recent power struggles have been noteworthy so it was encouraging to see the ball jump off his bat to RF again. Morneau followed with a walk and Dioner Navarro drove Abreu in with a single to take a 1-0 lead.

Things began to unravel for the Sox in the bottom of the 5th. James Shields, who had pitched well up until this inning, gave up a leadoff triple to Austin Romine. Iglesias would drive him home with a sac fly tying the game at 1-1. After that, the Tigers began to tee off on James scoring 5 more runs. When the dust settled, the Tigers collected 3 singles, 2 triples, and 2 doubles in the inning for a total of 6 runs. It's the type of inning the Sox offense seems incapable of producing and left me looking on in jealously at the thunder in the Tiger lineup. It was fitting that this was also the inning that Charlie Tilson got hurt. Charlie tried to help out the cause for James Shields diving for a catch on Miguel Cabrera's liner to the gap in right center. However, it looked like he either caught his spike in the turf or simply slipped and it caused his leg to land very awkwardly. They are saying its a hamstring strain and he will be evaluated tomorrow but it looked really bad and I would have to think a trip to the DL is almost certain. The White Sox have now had 4 minor league callups get hurt on their 1st day with the team. Backup catcher Kevan Smith got back spasms before he even took the field. Jason Coats collided in the outfield with J.B. Shuck. Matt Davidson broke a bone in his foot rounding 1B on his first hit in a White Sox uniform. Tonight, Tilson gets hurt diving for a ball in his first game. It's almost unreal and its impossible to levy any blame on the organization for this. It's just extraordinary bad luck.

The Tigers tacked on 4 more runs off Matt Albers and Michael Ynoa in separate innings. Albers gave up a HR to Cabrera and Ynoa allowed a 2RBI single to Kinsler. The Sox offense would scratch a few more runs out in this game via the long ball. Todd Frazier hit his team leading 30th HR and Avi Garcia of all people had two long loud HRs to left center. Yes, you read that correctly, Garcia hit two HRs on fastballs that he pulled. The second one was hit so hard and so far, it might still be in the air. It's a shame the game was way out of reach by then for them to matter much.

The Tigers are a red hot ballclub and the White Sox are a cold ballclub. The final score was indicative of two teams going in opposite directions. The Tigers are accomplishing the feat that I hoped the Sox would. They are catching fire at the right time and are starting to close in on the Red Sox for that second wild card and are within shouting distance of the AL Central lead to boot. Meanwhile, Robin Ventura's White Sox seem well on their way to another protected first round draft pick with another 2nd half fade in progress. Charlie Tilson getting hurt is just the whipped cream on the garbage sundae that the 2016 White Sox season has become. Sigh. Chris Sale is on the bump tomorrow to try and keep his AL Cy Young season going as he takes on Michael Fulmer.

Game Notes-

-Charlie Tilson's injury will be evaluated tomorrow. A DL trip seems almost certain.

-James Shields had his streak of 6 quality starts snapped tonight.

-Todd Frazier hit his 30th HR tonight. He needs 19 more to tie Albert Belle for the franchise record.

-Matt Albers gave up his 8th HR tonight in 40 innings pitched.

That's all folks:
