Sale Not Sharp Enough to Overcome Stale O

July 28 at Chicago Cubs

Toon Squad Update:
Daffy Duck

Short Take:  In his first game back from suspension, Chris Sale pitches well, but Sox offense lacks punch against Lackey; Sox fall to Cubs 3-1

What a week of White Sox baseball. The Sox came off a horrendous west coast road trip to lose the first two games at home to the Tigers. When last Saturday’s throwback-to-the-70s promo game came around, the night’s starter and White Sox ace Chris Sale was unexpectedly sent home and replaced by Matt Albers. Apparently Sale threw a tantrum somewhat akin to a 3-year-old. Hating the throwback jerseys that he was being forced to wear that night, he cut them up - making them unwearable and earning himself a trip home for that day (and for the next 5 days, after he was suspended by the team).

Cue all the cutting puns: “Shear Dominance”, “Edward Sale-sorhands”, yeah, yeah, I think we’ve heard them all.

A funny thing happened, though, on Sale’s way to the penalty box. A hodgepodge of bullpen pitchers pulled out the win that night, and then Sox won the next 3 games for the first 4 game winning streak since May – including the 1st two games of the Crosstown Series against the Cubs at the Cell. This put our boys at .500 for the first time in...well, a while.

Then last night, the Cubs trounced the Sox at Wrigley. Tonight, however, an unapologetic Chris Sale returned to the team for the first time after JerseyGate, perhaps with his image a bit tarnished (and with this Sox fan a little disappointed in an apparent lack of maturity). But who cares how shiny his image is, or how mature he is, as long as he shuts up and pitches?

Sale may have shut up and pitched, but the White Sox offense just plain shut up against Cubs starter John Lackey. The Sox scored their only run in the 1st inning, when Tim Anderson hit an infield single and Melky Cabrera doubled to the right field corner, scoring Anderson. And that was all the scoring the Sox could muster against Lackey and the Cubs bullpen, including newly acquired Aroldis Chapman – who struck out Melky with Saladino at 3rd in the 8th inning.

Sale threw 6 innings of 6-hit ball, giving up 2 earned runs. Kris Bryant broke his six-strikeout streak against Sale by doubling in the 1st, scoring Dexter Fowler (who reached via the dreaded leadoff walk). It remained a tie game until the 3rd, when Sale beaned Fowler and walked Bryant, then gave up an RBI single to Ben Zobrist.

In the 8th, Zobrist doubled off Sox reliever Nate Jones and reached 3rd when Adam Eaton bobbled his liner into the right field corner. Addison Russell earned the RBI on an infield single, scoring Zobrist, and it was 3-1 Flubs. And that's how it remained.

So the Sox split the Crosstown Series with the Cubs, each team winning the 2 games at their home field. Meh.

After the game, the Sox headed to Minnesota for a 7:10 start on Friday; Jose Quintana faces Ricky Nolasco.
