Ho hum, another walkoff win

July 25 vs. Cubs

Toon Squad Update:
Yogi Bear
No Boo Boo tonight.

Short Take: Undefeated since Scissorgate.

Even a belated and half-assed apology by wayward All Star Chris Sale couldn't dampen a late 5-4 victory over the visiting North Siders.

Today it was Tyler Saladino's turn to bail out the woeful Sox bullpen, which coughed up yet another ninth-inning lead against the Cubs. He cracked a low liner that bounded high off the pitcher's mound into centerfield, allowing J.B. Shuck to score from second. Incredibly, this was the third-straight ninth inning walkoff since Sale took out his frustrations on poor Mary Frances Veeck's sartorial legacy.

Sale granted an exclusive interview to's Scott Merkin, who quoted him as saying manager Robin Ventura "has to fight for us." You might wonder who else in the clubhouse he's speaking for, if anyone. You might wonder, too, if Rick Hahn senses any urgency to deal his ace before another implosion damages Sale's market value. One thing not worth wondering is whether Ventura's going anywhere. His inexplicable job security must only be stronger now, assuming the front office wouldn't fire him for fear people would conclude that they'd caved in to their petulant lefty. Thanks a lot, Chris.

Can the Sox climb back into the wild card race? Not damn likely. Could they make the rest of the season interesting? Not much more damn likely. They are not who we thought they were in April. They are not what we hoped they might still be in May. They aren't even "mired in mediocrity." With any luck, a handful of them will be playing elsewhere in two weeks, so at least we have that to look forward to. But for now: Yea, another valiant comeback after the bullpen choked!

That's all folks: The Crosstown Cup is within our grasp. Respectability is up there on the highest shelf with no step ladder in sight.
