Sale shut down the Mariners, Robertson **** the bed

July 18 vs. Mariners in Seattle

Toon Squad Update:
Iron Man
Sale is starkly superior to nearly all other MLB pitchers.

Short Take: Closer turns Sale mastery into misery.

Chris Sale gave up one hit in 8 innings, and David Robertson couldn't get three outs in the 9th that would have got the Sox back on track after a dismal stretch just before and after the All Star break. Instead, they lost 4-3 for another heartbreaker in Seattle.

Tim Anderson (solo) and Todd Frazier (with a man on) both homered early, and it looked like those runs would hold up thanks to Sale's total dominance. But then his mastery yielded to the misery of our erratic bullpen.

With Robertson all over the zone, Kyle Seager drilled a single to score Robinson Cano for the Mariners' first run. That brought Adam Lind up as the winning run with two men on. He was treated to a spinner that Robertson left on the inner half, whereas Navarro was looking for it out of the zone on the outer half. Lind tomahawked it over the fence in right-center.

The Sox are going nowhere, but at least we get to watch the best pitcher in baseball once a week. I wonder if we'll ever contend while he's still wearing a Sox uniform.

That's all folks: This team is toast.
