Bait and Switch!

July 8th Vs. Braves

Toon Squad Update:
Bizarro Pikachu
Shocking and not in a good way.

Short Take: Chris Sale has a decidedly un-Chris Sale like night.

Well that sucked. It's been a decidedly up and down season for us recap writers but tonight I was really looking forward to writing about the game. The Sox had been winning. The bats had been hot. They were facing the hapless and hard-tanking Braves and of course everyone's favorite Sox monster, Chris Sale was on the mound. Unfortunately as with many well laid plans the Sox's (and mine) went awry and I was left to clean up the mess or at least document the 11-8 loss.

As mentioned, Chris Sale took the mound tonight and had his worst outing of the year. He managed to make it through five innings but along the way gave up eight runs on ten hits. Three of those hits made like Elvis and left the building. Another four were doubles. His outing could have been even worse save for the Sox turning another triple play (6-3) in the third - their third of the season tying a major league record held by several teams. That inning was the only one Chris did not yield any runs. He made it through five but was pulled with the Sox losing 8-6. The big hero for the Braves was none other than Tyler Flowers who managed a 2-run bomb in the second and another run scoring double in the 5th - the last run Sale would yield as he struck out Aybar to end the inning.

Offensively the Sox had a pretty solid night. They scored eight runs. And when Sale actually threw his last pitch the Sox were losing 8-4. They'd tack on two in the bottom half of the 5th to pull within two. Along the way they hit three doubles themselves and tacked on two more solo shots (honestly the number of 1-run homers this team hits is getting very frustrating.) Unfortunately their late inning heroics fell short as they squandered opportunities in the 6th -men on 2nd and third with two outs no runs scored; 7th - men on 2nd and third with no outs and men on first and third with one out - one run scored and 9th men on first and second with nobody out - one run scored. The final tally of 8 runs should have been enough on most nights with Sale pitching but tonight it wasn't as all the Sox runs would have only tied the Braves after Sale left the game.

Unfortunately after Sale left the Sox put in Chris Beck who gave up three while retiring none. Jennings came on and was actually on the mound for the final two runs of the inning. After a walk to load the bases he induced a couple of flyballs and an infield single that combined scored two runs before retiring Flowers on an fielders choice to close the book on Atlanta's scoring. At that time the Braves had an 11-6 lead and that turned out to be more than enough on this frustrating night.

Well I guess even an ace can have an off night. Sale has had a few games recently where he's been less than sharp and hopefully the All-Star break will give him a chance to recharge his batteries and relax a bit. Even if he starts he shouldn't pitch more than a couple of innings and hopefully come back strong in his next start sometime next weekend. As for the rest of the team they go back at it on Saturday against this same Braves team. Game time is 1:10 in Chicago. Hopefully Jose Quintana can unleash some lightning of his own.

That's all folks:
Sox released their Pokemon star only to have him turn on them.
