July 4 vs. Yankees at the Cell

Toon Squad Update:
Baby Huey
Sabathia doesn't bounce off the mound the way he used to.

Short Take: Signs of life continue as Sox top Yanks.

The Sox celebrated Independence Day by blowing up the Yankees for an 8-2 win. James Shields picked up his second straight victory, Tim Anderson had his 12th multihit game (out of 23 games), and Melky Cabrera was 2 for 5 in his return to the lineup.

The Sox are 1.5 back in the wild card race, which is a more cheerful thought than their 7-game deficit in the Central Division. Shields continues to bounce back from his near-death experience. Maybe most promising of all are signs that the worst may be over for Todd Frazier, who was 3 for 3 with 2 walks and an RBI.

CC Sabathia has cooled off since his hot start, but he is still stingy when it comes to yielding homers. That made the 2-run shot by Anderson all the more impressive, as the rookie got a pitch on the outside corner and took it deep to centerfield. The kid has a live bat, as they say. After years of only prospects with dead bats, he's a sight for sore eyes.

With at least a split of the two remaining games against New York, the Sox would win their fourth straight series. Does it matter? Well, it beats the alternative. Do they have a real shot at the playoffs? Stay tuned.

WSI's
That's all folks:
Frazier's average keeps climbing, Anderson keeps looking like the real deal.
