El Duque or The Duke

June 20 at Fenway vs. the Red Sox

Toon Squad Update:
Foghorn Leghorn
I thought I heard Chris Berman cry out, "Oh nooooo!"

Short Take:Was that El Duque or just Zach Duke?

The Sox had nothing going offensively until a two-out double by Abreu scored two in the 10th yielded an improbable 3-1 victory. But they wouldn't have been there if the Red Sox hadn't failed to score with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the 9th.

This White Sox team most likely does not have World Series glory in its future, but one of their faceless middle relievers evoked the magic of 2005. Zach Duke relieved Zach Putnam, who walked the bases full in the home half of the 9th inning. With nothing really to lose, Duke pitched like the ghost of Orlando Hernandez -- one of the all-time "money" pitchers -- by wriggling out of a seemingly impossible jam, just as El Duque himself did at Fenway nearly 11 years ago.

Chicago starter Miguel Gonzalez looked like anything but a back-of-rotation pitcher, shutting out the vaunted Red Sox offense until they scored once in the 7th. If only GM Rick Hahn had waited to see whether Gonzalez was a suitable 5th starter before rashly agreeing to pay some stiff $28 million when we haven't finished paying the previous stiff his $14 million.

This team looks dead in the water, but maybe they can build on tonight's victory. For some reason, they're able to win in extra innings, which is about the only thing they have in common with good teams.

That's all folks: The Sox win in extras thanks to an extraordinary feat by Zach Duke.
