Walked Off in Toon-Town...

June 17 at Cleveland

Toon Squad Update:
Ol' Gill
Like that ill-fated Simpson's character, Jose Quintana has no luck at all.

Short Take: As usual Sox bats give Jose Quintana no help.

If Jose Quintana decided to break several objects in the locker room then go off on a bender and trash a bar you could hardly blame him. Once again he pitched well enough to win. Once again the bats gave him no help at all. When he finally broke down and yielded a second run in the 8th inning before getting pulled it was like it had been ordained before he ever took the mound. The Sox managed to tie it up in the top of the ninth but the Toons then walked it off in the bottom half and the Sox went on to lose 3-2.

Really the story of this game was Jose Quintana with a minor shoutout to Avisail Garcia. Quintana pitched as well as he has in a while and ran up 7.2 strong innings yielding only 7 hits and a lone walk to the second place Cleveland Indians. The first run the Toons scored was in the first. After a leadoff single and a bang-bang stolen base Jose struck out the next batter. Unfortunately then he gave up a second single to score Rajai Davis. Francisco Lindor then tried to steal second and he was thrown out on another bang-bang play. In the second, Jose yielded a 1-out single but then retired the next eleven batters in a row. The Toons managed a single and a walk in the 6th but didn't score any runs. Another Toon single in the 7th was left stranded but Jose came out for the 8th and finally broke down just enough. A leadoff single was followed by a strikeout and then with two strikes Jason Kipnis drilled a liner to center. With Shuck playing over toward left the ball got by him and to the wall and the speedy Michael Martinez scored easily. Jose stayed on for one more batter whom he retired before giving way to Nate Jones who got the final out.

Offensively the Sox continued to scatter hits and walks but not string enough together to do any damage. They managed to put a man on base in each of the first six innings including two in the second. Melky even managed a double along the way, but their lone run in the first eight innings came on a misplayed ball on what should have been a routine Adam Eaton Single in the third. The Toon's rightfielder charged hard and got caught in-between. He then slipped and wiped out spectacularly as he tried to pull up to field the ball on a bounce. The ball shot by his flailing spastic effort and went all the way to the wall. Adam ended up at third with a "nudge nudge wink wink" triple. Jose Abreu grounded out to short and the Toons conceded the run and the tie. Unfortunately that was the extent of the offense while Quintana was pitching but with one out in the ninth Lawrie and Garcia managed back to back doubles to tie the game. For a brief moment there was light shining but Garcia was stranded when Shuck and Anderson both struck out. Nate Jones came back out for the ninth and with two strikes on Carlos Santana threw a pitch that caught enough of the outer half and Santana drilled it into the picnic area in center for the walk off win.

So yeah, again, if Quintana goes off on a bender and starts breaking things, I for one could find it in my heart to forgive him. The guy just has some of the worst luck in baseball. But, it's the Sox in 2016. This is kind of their story this year. Not much smoke and definitely no fire. Maybe that can start to turn around tomorrow when these two teams face off again. Game time is 5:10 in Chicago and Carlos Rodon is pitching. Hopefully he pitches as well as Quintana did. Hopefully the bats do better.

That's all folks:
Jose can only look at the shiny brass ring, never grab it.
