Eaton's fourth hit wins it in 12

June 13 at the Cell vs. Detroit

Toon Squad Update:
Pepe Le Pew
Hahn dealt for Shields, but it's the fans who smelled it.

Short Take:Shields dug another deep hole, but Sox come all the way back to win in 12.

The Sox kept chipping away at the Tigers' lead before tying it in the ninth and winning in the 12th. This is the kind of gritty victory that could build some momentum. The final score was 10-9.

Tough saying it's a step in the right direction because James Shields lasted five innings after spotting Detroit seven runs. But he had nowhere to go but up after his pitiful Sox debut last week. After just two starts by Shields, Don Cooper visiting him on the mound has become a familiar sight. His velocity isn't overpowering, but he was reaching the low 90s. Location of pitches has been his main problem -- falling behind early in the count, then grooving fastballs. At least he ate a few innings. When Robin Ventura got tossed in the 7th for arguing balls and strikes, an air of futility lingered.

But the Sox -- and particularly Adam Eaton -- were not to be denied. Abreu's power surge kept gaining momentum with a two-run homer in the third. Navarro added a solo homer in the fourth. The Sox closed to within a run at 7-6 before finally tying it up in the bottom of the ninth. Would they close out the win in extras or suffer yet another crushing loss?

Shuck led off the 12th with a sharp double down the RF line. Tim Anderson bunted him to third -- a rookie with sound fundamentals?! Then Eaton hit a walk-off Baltimore chop to send everyone to bed happy.

WSI's
That's all folks: The Sox are again again a .500 team.
