WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Yeah, we had our #3 hitter bunt with two guys on -- you wanna make something of it?

May 30 in NYC vs. the Mets

Toon Squad Update:
Not Tom Paciorek, the other Wimpy

Short Take:Sox losing streak hits seven games.

Matt Harvey suddenly turned dominant as the Sox failed to scratch out a run for poor Jose Quintana, who struck out seven in giving up just one run over seven innings. His only mistake -- apart from playing for a team whose hitters have seldom supported him over the years -- was a solo homer by Neil Walker to lead off the seventh inning. That was enough for the Mets as the Sox offense apparently never made it through TSA on the way from KC to NYC. The Sox fell to the Mets, 1-0.

The Ventura haters will be all over the Sox's one scoring threat, when Eaton and Abreu reached with no one out in the seventh. Rather than let the guy batting third in his order a chance to hit with men on base -- which is generally what #3 hitters are there for -- our manager decided to have Melky Cabrera bunt them over. The bunt succeeded, but the strategy did not as clean-up hitter Todd Frazier popped to first, then J.B. Shuck grounded out to end the threat.

You don't have to hate sacrifice bunts in general to think Ventura's gamble was dodgy. There was little likelihood of Frazier getting a decent pitch with Shuck hitting behind him, but he did in fact get one. Unfortunately he couldn't handle it, and that was that.

At least the bullpen didn't lose the game for a change.

That's all folks:
Another gem by Quintana goes for naught
