No Relief In Sight

May 29 at Kansas City Royals

Toon Squad Update:

Bad luck bullpen

Short Take: Dark storm clouds follow the Sox bullpen day after day.

Sox starting pitching and Sox hitting have been good this road trip. Unfortunately, the Sox bullpen has been a disaster. More runs were given up in the 8th inning, and the White Sox were defeated by the Kansas City Royals 5-4.

Chris Sale got off to a rocky start in the bottom of the 1st. KC second baseman Whit Merrifield singled with one out. Lorenzo Cain hit a double over Austin Jackson's head to drive in the first run. Eric Hosmer singled to drive in Cain. Then DH Kendrys Morales tried to duplicate Cain's feat, but Jackson made a reaching backhand grab with his back to the infield and robbed Morales of a double. Jackson fired the ball in to short, and Hosmer was caught off first for a double play. Disaster was temporarily averted.

The Sox had a good chance to get back in the 2nd but managed only one run. Jose Abreu hit a one-out single off KC starter Edinson Volquez, and went to third on Brett Lawrie's single. Dioner Navarro singled to drive in Abreu and send Lawrie to third. Navarro then caught Volquez sleeping and stole second. But Avisail Garcia was too anxious, and chased a pitch out of the strike zone. Tyler Salidino hit a nice line drive but Cain was able to run it down.

Chris sale piled up a lot of pitches but kept KC scoreless. The Sox put him into the lead in the 5th. Garcia drew a one-out walk, and Saladino doubled him to third. Adam Eaton drove in a run with a ground ball to second. Jackson came through with a two-out single to drive in Saldino. and the Sox led 3-2. The Sox added on a run in the 7th against KC reliever Luke Hochevar on a bases loaded sacrifice fly, again by Jackson.

But Sale was unable to finish the game. Modern pitching management decries 100+ pitch counts, and Sale was over 120. Today it was Nate Jones's turn to blow the lead, and he gave up three runs in the bottom of the 8th to seal the Sox's fate yet again. Sox hero Austin Jackson was injured chasing one of the many hard hit balls given up by Jones.

The Sox head off to New York to face the NL pennant defending champion Mets. Monday's game will be broadcast on Comcast Sportsnet starting at 12:10 pm. Jose Quintana gets the start against Matt Harvey.

That's all folks:
Dark days continue until the bullpen figures it out.
