Breaking Good

May 22 vs Kansas City Royals

Toon Squad Update:
Foes defeated by grim determination

Short Take: Close game finally breaks the Sox way.

Things have not gone well in Soxland for the last two weeks. Poor run production, bullpen blowups, and a lack of timely hitting have found the Sox on the wrong end of the score. Run production was mediocre today, but two timely hits and a lights-out bullpen spelled a 3-2 White Sox victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Carlos Rodon breezed through the first three Kansas City hitters. In the top of the 2nd inning, base hits by Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez put Rodon in trouble. A good pitch to Alex Gordon resulted in a double play. But red hot Paulo Orlando hit the first pitch he saw into center field, and the Royals led 1-0 early.

Todd Frazier evened things up in the bottom of the 4th by hitting a high outside 1-2 pitch into the Kansas City bullpen. It was the eighth home run that Frazier has hit with two strikes this year. Melky Cabrera followed with a double to right, but the bottom of the Sox order made no productive outs and the inning ended with the score tied 1-1.

The Sox followed up with some more offense in the bottom of the 5th. Alex Avila coaxed a walk out of Royals starter Yordano Ventura. Austin Jackson followed with a single, and it looked like the Sox offense was finally breaking out of its slump. Adam Eaton hit a slicing rocket to center field, but Lorenzo Cain tracked down the ball for a loud out. Jimmy Rollins hit a slow ground ball to second, and the runners advanced. The Royals pitcher wanted no part of Frazier, and threw four pitches out of the strike zone to load the bases. But Ventura made a big mistake by throwing a fastball over the plate to Cabrera on an 0-2 count. Melky ripped the ball into center, scoring a pair of runs. The Sox led 3-1.

Rodon was in trouble again in the top of the 6th. Alex Gordon singled with one out, and Orlando doubled on the first pitch again. Omar Infante was able to loft a sacrifice fly to right, but Rodon induced a ground out to third from Drew Butera and preserved the Sox lead. The Sox had a chance to add on in the bottom of the 6th when Brett Lawrie led off with a double. But after a Carlos Sanchez sacrifice bunt, neither Avila nor Jackson could drive in Lawrie.

Rodon started the 7th, got two outs, and was replaced with Matt Albers. Albers did his job and struck out Cain to end the inning. Ths Sox offense couldn't produce any more runs, so it was up to the bullpen to preserve the win. Zach Duke, Nate Jones, and David Robertson did just that, with style. Not one Royal reached base against the Sox relievers today. The Sox added to their AL Central lead as Cleveland lost.

Those same Indians come to town on Monday for a rare twi-night doubleheader, making up the rained-out April 10 game. Game 1 starts at 4:10 pm, broadcast on Comcast Sportsnet. Mat Latos will start against Mike Clevinger. Game 2 will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1, or 7:10 pm, whichever is later. Eric Johnson gets a spot start against Cody Anderson.

That's all folks:
Saving the day is always appreciated.
